The great hot wax vinyl gods in heaven have smiled on Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. Maybe for a few months, maybe for the long haul GREAT OLDIES of the '50s and '60s are rockin'here. Thanks to Dusty Rhodes and friends the Good guys are back on the air spinnin' and grinnin' with the oldies. It is so great to have the familiar radio voices with the great tunes back.
I don't know how long it will last. I guess it's a chance, maybe the last chance, for a local station in this area (more or less) to pitch to the local area, probably through local advertising, and see truly if radio directed at the over 55 market can succeed in a small, very local target audience.
However long it lasts, let's savor what we have and treasure the moments Dusty and the guys are giving us. We that listen should get off our butts and support the advertisers who are risking their advertising dollars on this format and target audience.
No less than public radio and TV, everyday is a pledge-seeking day to keep the oldies as we love them on the air. WCET, WKET etc love pushing oldies concerts every pledge time. And almost never over the course of the year do you ever see another oldies concert. So they know there is money to be seduced from our pockets through oldies music. I can always tell when pledge time is here. Two to three times that week or so there is Oldies concerts of one kind or another on the public TV stations. I have come to not even turn to the channel because I know it's pledge week and I'll never see another concert regardless of my pledge.
Dusty and the gang are offering us Oldies every day, all day. Dusty and his friends have taken it on themselves to lease and play. But regardless of their love of the music they cannot operate without profit enough to stay on the air. So those of us who love local oldies really need to put our money where our mouths are and support those advertisers and the station who are giving us what we are asking for. Let's help DJO make believers that oldies can survive on commercial radio - AM radio at that. Dare we hear the gradually crescending voice of Jack Jones (or the artist of your choice - they all sang it) at this point, in the background, singing "...To dream the impossible dream..."
thank you Dusty and friends...It's so great to hear Dusty, Jack stahl, Ted McCallister and I'm hoping (if he's not there already) to hear Dangerous Dan back on saturday nights and Cool Bobby B.
Take care,
Jim
