jry,

I miss your talk format. You really gave it a great try. I saw your billboards all over. People in town knew the "Little One". It's just so difficult to compete against the big guys.

It's a shame radio is so controlled by just a few big players. I long for the days when the small time operator could make a good buck and provide a public service. The business has gotten away from the public service aspect the FCC originally intended.

I think all the reasons mentioned are why the high frequency AM stations are suffering. I'm not saying they can't make it, I'm saying odds are against them.

Thanks for that, Biz. We gave it a good run. We do pretty well, serving out audience with what we do. Its a good niche and we get good feedback. The flip in Cincinnati is drawing lots of compliments and the broadcasters seem happy. Our stress levels are much lower, to be sure. There were certain individuals in the building that were more interested in running a circus, instead of a radio station. They're gone, i'm glad. Perhaps some better team members would have made us a real success, in talk radio. Who knows, for sure. I'm not planning on returning to that format, anytime soon.

I know, some will dismiss that article, but it does a good job of pointing out that the AM dial is very gray and not getting any younger. It would be nice if AM could be revitalized with new out of the box programming and I think you see some of that with CC launching comedy formats on its smaller signals. I think it would also help if radio could be a community builder and start using social media to its advantage in helping to build a bond with the younger potential listeners that advertisers crave. The problems of signal coverage is just part of the issue that faces the AM Band.

Yes. I will tell you that if you have good programming and promote it well. Take it to the people, you'll get younger demos.

We are hitting all kinds of 25 to 35 year olds with 1050. We are using FB and public appearances to promote it. The billboards hit on Monday. Check out the FB page for Inspirational 1050 and look at the photos of those "friending" or "liking" us. Its incredible.

I'm glad to know that you are using the new media to your advantage and that the responses are growing as more people find out what you are doing with 1050/1160.

Have seen 1160 billboards all over town. I saw one one my way to Newtown, I thought of you, JRY.

If billboards achevied higher ratings and revenue, WEBN would have them on every corner. If billboards worked so well then advertisers wouldn't need radio, would they?

Sounding a bit bitter?
Billboards are an expense that some broadcasters won't do. Maybe its a debt thing, i don't know.

Billboards WORK for radio because, someone driving down the road will see the board and can immediately sample the product.
It's just like putting up a Cracker Barrel board a mile before the exit that they are located at. Putting out the bait to catch a few.
There are a lot of business categories that do not work well with billboard advertising as the reader can forget the message.

No bitter at all. I could care less how you waste your money. How did they work for you at WQRT?

Pretty good while we had something worthy of promotion...
