Really got to sample between Oldies 1160 and 'GRR yesterday, as I was in for Easter at some family gathering....
I like how 1160 is coming into this, instead of how 1530 did it... It seemed to me 1530 bad mouthed 'GRR's decision to go to a "Gen-II" Oldies approach and really alienated a group (in my demo) that likes both approaches and felt they had the best of two distinct generations that we grew up in (the last of "Gen-I" and the beginning of "Gen-II").... With that, and being in radio for three decades, I looked past it...But I think 1530 put so much into the Anti-70's
schpeel, that those who liked the earlier generation Oldies tended to take offense and not listen much, because they liked hearing the "Doobies", "Eagles" and other 70's based Oldies that should be called at least "Superhits" from that era (being nearly or over thirty years released).... On 1160, the day coverage was very nice in the south, west and northeast parts of Cincy I was in and I caught the night pattern going down to the weak southwest...I was still able to listen until a couple of miles east of Carrolton (smack dab between Cincy and Louisville...That's a good 35 miles southwest of their Florence/Westside tower site... They were positive with all of their promotion and positioning and just lack a little 'reverb' that would help 'glamorize' their younger jocks doing older Oldies....I was a litte suprised at 'GRR's weekenders that seem to lack Oldies knowlege and were messing up artist's names and titles and such (two guys that seemed uncomfortable with the genre')... I did like the 60's-70's mix and punchier processing that lacked for years on 103.5....But, the sales, music and live promotions of 1160 seemed to flow with less clutter than 1530 who really tried to pump the 'Good Guys' that had been on old 1360...But, it seems the ones that moved to 1160, along with the younger ones filling in the gaps seem to have a "TEAM" sound and if they can keep a long term momenteum and not give it 1 to 2 years of books, but give it a five year plan, they can carve their niche and be a consitant player....I really see them (if patient) getting a 2 to 3 share in a five year run...But Rome wasn't built in a day and they are not going to hurt the overall numbers of 'GRR in the long run...TWO DISTINCT ERAS...Let it be and don't bad mouth the other guy, just show everything you've got in your station and let it work to your favor!
