WDJO Signal Questions

Ran into a WDJO DJ about 2 months ago and was questioning him about the problems with WYLL killing them at times. Found out a couple of things. Those couple of Saturdays they were off the air for a while was because they were working on some ground problems at the transmitter site. He also told me that they filed a complaint with the FCC about the interference that WYLL was causing them. My question is there a way to see the status of this complaint on the FCC web site? Have not been able to find anything.

Interesting stuff. I hope they can pump that signal up a bit. Please keep up informed on what you learn. Thanks

If I remember correctly, WYLL filed to have their signal upped to 50,000 watts with a null toward Cincinnati at night. Maybe the signal just didn't get flipped to its directional pattern the nights in question.

Come to think of it without looking at the FCC site, isn't WYLL directional all the time?

Hopefully, WDJO can solve their grounding problems. Pretty good station they have down there.

To all of the concerned and loyal listeners of WDJO: This is what Mr. Dave Dybas, the Chief Engineer for WYLL 1160-AM has to say about this thread after I shared it with him via email:

Artie,

Our research department provided me with a copy of the WDJO night IFRSS
(interference free root sum squared)pattern for WDJO. This is the pattern,
overlaid on a map, showing the area within which WDJO should NOT receive any
interference from any stations at night.

The IFRSS signal contour for WDJO is a 24 mv/m contour, which means any area
of lesser signal strength can, by FCC rules, receive interference from other
co-channel stations.

The WDJO IFRSS night contour encompasses the town of Florence, Erlanger,
Union, Lakeside Park, and touches upon Independence, Villa Hills and
Burlington. Any towns outside of that area can, by FCC rules, receive
interference from co-channel stations.

The WDJO night IFRSS contour does not cover Cincinatti and is significantly
far from Cincinatti. So anyone in Cincinatti, Covington, Bellvue, Wilder,
Highland Hts, Taylor Mill, Covedale, Walton, Chevoit, and some other towns,
will hear other co-channel stations in the background of WDJO.

You have my permission to post this information, if you like, so others can
better understand the situation.

Dear Dave,

Thanks for the post-- could you decipher for those of us who don't speak engineer?

P.S. Cincinnati-- two Ns, one T.

Artie,

The post looks good....you've got my blessing....

You can add my e-mail address to the post so people can contact me if they
wish.

There may be a few out there that might need a less technical explanation.

Here's my humble "non technical answer" from what WYLL's engineer was trying to explain.

WDJO's nighttime signal comprises an area which includes Florence, etc that should not see signficant interference from other stations. Cincinnati is not included in that area. Therefore, if you live in certain suburbs in and around Cincinnati that are outside that first area I mentioned, you can receive up to significant interference from other stations at night while trying to listen to WDJO.
