WDJO Site Down?

I'm having difficulty in logging on to the WDJO website. All that comes up when attemting to log on is a dark background and stars. Is it just me or are others having this experience too?

I tried but still no luck. I'm using Windows 98SE...could that be the problem? It has worked in the past.

Since Windows98 is no longer supported it is possible that an update made to their website may have rendered your system unable to display their content. I would suggest getting a newer computer as Win98 is a disaster waiting to happen if you're on line. No Support means no security updates and your computer is a sitting duck for viruses, trojans and spyware.

People who are using Windows98 offline are OK if they are happy with what they have. I would never put a Windows98 or Me machine on line though. Tiger Direct and others have refurbished computers for sale at quite reasonable cost. Stay away from Vista Home Basic though, anything else should be fine and any will seem much better than what you have now.

What's the scoop on Vista Home Basic? Are there other versions of Vista that are better?

Vista Home Basic does not incorporate much of what makes Vista different than XP. It is basically an upgrade of XP and was meant I suppose for systems lacking the horsepower to actually run Vista. Also the interfaces and user controls are all foreign to me coming from the Windows 2000 / XP world but they also are different from the other versions of Vista. In other words they moved all of the controls that you need to customize it to your needs / preferences. I have a friend who has it and he always calls me to fix something and I spend 20 minutes relearning it every time.

From what I've heard Windows Vista is not all it's cracked up to be if not worse than XP's predicessor ME(Millenium). XP is the best performer.

To be honest I have no big gripe with Vista, except that Vista Home Basic is misrepresented. What I do object to is that they are already talking about the next Windows to come out in 2010. For stable operation and reliability they need to develop and support one version which I agree should have been XP. When they make major overhauls and programmers start to tweak their utilities to utilize the newest features it breaks the old stuff as happened to RATCISDJ97. The problem is with the bits of standard code built into the OS that are used by programmers to run their software. If these are withdrawn or drastically altered then existing software that was running yesterday won't work tomorrow. Older OSs like Win-9x which are no longer supported can be left in the dirt when new software designed for Vista tries to run in that environment.
