Has there been any resolution to the issue of changing the nighttime signal on WDJO? When I talked with the station back in February when the changeover took place, they indicated that they expected good news soon. Now that the nights are getting longer, their signal is reduced even sooner. Anyone with any news.....Also, I have hours of WUBE tapes when they were programmed by Drake in 1967-68. Is there anyone with info on a audio library that may want these.

I think there was hope that when WYLL-AM 1160 in Chicago switched to its new nighttime pattern, the skywave interference in Cincinnati would be less than it had been. WYLL was running 5 kw directional at night, with about 8614 watts pointed at Cincinnati. The new signal is 50 kw pointed north, but 14 kw is still coming towards Cincinnati. The wild thing is that with that signal so directional, they shoot 129,000 watts into Wisconsin.
I've noticed less interference downtown in the early morning and evening. WYLL used to be plain as day right by the Channel 19 building, but I don't hear it anymore like I used to. Maybe it's skipping over us. The new nighttime site is a degree or more south and slightly west of the old site, which is still the daytime site.

I stand to be corrected by someone more knowledgable than me, but a glance at Radio-Locator would certainly suggest less juice from WYLL aimed at Cincinnati than was the case with the old pattern. As for 129KW going north....I live about 50 miles almost due north of the new WYLL nighttime stick. Their night signal is not what one might expect,with several regulars clearly audible under WYLL all the time (but not WDJO).

I love what Dusty and the guys are doing. But they need to take it to the next level with some promotion of the station. The website still isn't even finished. Great on air product, and poor execution on everything else. Why fail with the same things that failed at WSAI? And they weren't in complete control there!

At 0 degrees, they're shooting 128 kw due north according to the map. The power ranges from just 264 watts due east to 40 kw to the northwest at about 320 degrees. The weakest spot at 255 degrees (west/southwest) is only 32 watts!

I live in Crystal Lake....so I'm more North-Northwest than due north. Still looking on a map and looking at their plot, I'm still comfortable in saying more than 50KW is aimed my way. I'm probably at 340-345 degrees....from about 50 miles.
WYLL's nighttime signal at my QTH isn't exactly chopped liver. It just isn't strong enough to completely cancel out the other junk on the channel. (Unlike, say, sister station WIND/560...which is a little farther away, but still strong enough to obliterate all the slop).

It looks like it was taken very soon after the site was built. If you zoom in as far as you can, you can see the radials planted under each tower. Check out Tower #1 (the upper left tower). It looks like it was built next to the property line and there aren't any radials between 300 and 10 degrees. Maybe it's just an illusion, but this may be why the signal isn't as good as would be expected to the northwest. Also, KSL is a monster!

Interesting shot....and there's definitely something missing in the upper left hand corner of the picture. Missing radials? Or was the land on the other side of that little creek or whatever it is simply plowed, mowed, or otherwise smoothed over.
The fact remains, the WYLL nightime signal here....while decent....is as good as might be expected. Especially if something in excess of 50KW is supposed to be pointed in my direction.
Meanwhile, the only thing overpowering the WDJO stream is the "You've got mail" sounder when Mrs. Cyberdad is running aol! ;D

I remember posting on the Chicago board about WDJO and someone responding that they were surprised that the old 1160 WBOB in Cincinnati was only 990 watts at night. They actually used to hear it under WYLL on the southeast side of Chicago. The plot shows it only shoots about 700 watts in that direction at night!
