WDJX Then and Now

Is it just me, or is DJX just not the station it used to be back in the 80s and 90s. Remember when DJX had Ann Avery, and Chris Randolph, Mike Shannon ECT.... What has happened to this station since. I know they do good in the arbs against Kiss, because Kiss is too Rhythmic for a Country POP/Rock city like Louisville. DJX was always more of an adult friendly CHR back then they were the best of the 80s and 90s, but the imaging, Processsing they used and the music Scheduling made the station sound cutting edge. I guess I might be getting too old for the DJX Target Audience. If im in the area I usually listen to Louie Fm or WFPK these days, and if im in the heart of Louisville I listen to the Dance Music on 99.3... I also enjoy 88.1.... Am I just growing out of the demograph, Is DJX just as hip for the new generation of teens and people in their early 20s as it was for me 15 to 20 years ago, maybe CHR music is just changing too much. I still consider myself a hip CHR fan, but I find myself more and more listening to Variety Hits, AAA, and AC, and I even enjoy talk radio now, Im a big fan of Coast to Coast. I feel im getting old, but DJX hasnt grown up with me. I would think they would want to keep some of their original listeners, being a 25 year old heritage station.

I still like djx and all there talent lives in the ville which is more then you can say for kiss fm. I wish they would put there dance mix show back on on saturday nights. Go to www.lkyradio.com and you can see what djx was like when it went on the air. Playlist and all.

I remember DJX started out as being KJ 99, or KJ 100 or something like that, then they switched to WDJX in 1985. I do agree that DJX is still way better than KISS, and still one of the best CHRs in the midwest. I only remember DJX having a Dance Mix show for a short time around 1992-1993, and then in like 94-95 they had the Saturday Night Bedrock, which was more Urban Leaned, but did play some Dance. They also used to air Open House Party in the late 80s and early 90s, but they dropped OHP sometime around summer of 1992 if I remember correctly.

I think they were the new kj 100 and then went a ac format and then in july of 1985 after one hour of christmas carols they became 99.7 djx. No they had a dance mix show with aj a jock there just 2 yrs ago or so on saturday nights. You can catch open house party when you are here in the ville on star 107.3 in elizabeth town on saturday nights. I think they have the right amount of urban not to much but kiss to much for me.

You forgot about Magi...I mean Majic (or was Majik) 100 FM between KJ-100 and DJX. IIRC, 99.7 taking the name "Magic" threw a wrench into Mike McVay's consultation of WRKA. His AC branding attached the name "Magic" to the station and couldn't use it.

If you go to John Quincy's WKLO tribute site (www.1080wklo.com) you can hear the format change from Beautiful Music WCSN to, for that moment, "JJ 100". They decided to call it "KJ 100" because management felt listeners would associate the station with Jimmie "JJ" Walker. The first song out of muzak was "Renegade" by Styx.

I havent never been able to get a good signal on 107.3 until im down past the Gene Snyder on I-65, the buildings in dowtown make it hard to get good reception on 107.3, and even 105.1 has signal issues in downtown. I can however get a pretty good signal on 98.3 Hot AC, I think they are also in E-town.

Now quicksie 98.3 a really good hot ac they play tori amos sometimes that tune fairytale and beth orton and weezer island in the sun. They also played carbon leaf when they were a hit a few years ago. All bands except for weezer only heard on triple a stations. But in there liners they say the station most boomers listen to in etown or something like that. No one wants to be reminded they are getting older kinda odd. That song island in the sun is one that wlrs should play but i guess that doesn't fit there red neck listeners that they attract and 13 yr olds!!! I like the max but quicksie is better they will play a oh wow song like back in t he spring or so they played grace kelly by mika an excellent song. Quicksie an interesting hot ac with a slight hint of triple a and alt thrown in.

remember the 'lateral replays' ?
hear a tune you like on KJ100FM...?
hear it again in 15 minutes on KJ100AM.

Yeah, and didnt DJX also simulcast on 1080 up to the mid 90s. I think they were also on a 15 minute delay because DJX on 99.7 was never playing the same song at the same time as 1080.

But the replay thing did not last that long. 1080 has been numerous formats. They have also been country and some satelite chr in the 80s and in the early 90s they were part time alternative. From like 2pm-8 or midnight or something along those lines.I remember you had some jocks named kim forget her last name but she was on qmf after all that and you had neil at night and phillip and tj michaels. I remember this lasted until Q2 went on the air or maybe shortly thereafter. Then in 1996 is when clear channel bought 1080. Which is not a very good talk station. 790 WWKY was so much better. 1080's morning show is pathetic!!! How about you guys at clear channel spend some money bring o reilly here during the day and alan colmes at night.

The wheel of format that is 1080....

5/79-1981 KJ-100 AM CHR (Partial simulcast and off set hours with lateral replays)
1981-1986 WCII....Good Times and Great Country Music....Country 11 W-C-Double Eye
1986-1988(ish) SMN's Starstation AC format with UK sports
1988-1991 Simulcast of WDJX-FM
1991-1993(ish) LMA with WXLN (Religion)
....then things get weird.........
Simulcast of WDJX
All AP News and Gary Burbank (WRES)
Real Country, Hit Country, DJX simulcast, Standards, Talk, among others as WKJK.

I'm sure there are few formats and call letters missing but it's close.

How you can recall the rest i give ya props lol Then things got weird stage is the part time alternative. Why clear channel bought them is beyond me :p

1080 never did have the good of a signal, especially on the primitive analog car radios that were around in the 80s.

I actually picked up WDJX's simulcast on AM-1080 back in 1988 down here in Knoxville, Tennessee.

I forgot to mention at Night when AM Signals are the strongest of course.

AM signals are not stronger at night. In fact, a majority of stations have to power down at night. 1080 reduces power from 10 kW during the day to 1 kW at night. However, all of 1080's signal is thrown to the southeast of the tower both day and night which explains why you could hear it at night in Tennessee.

I didn't know that about AM 1080 powering down at night, however I do know for a fact that some AM Signals are stronger at night. Especially AM Stations that are 50,000 watts 24/7. I also know this due to the fact that you can pick up a lot of different stations from all across the country that you normally could not pick up during the day.
