WDKC WTRY 106.5

Hey Guys:

I was wondering if anybody can tell me with this, was WDKC, WTRY 106.5 MOR Music format more in the AC soundish range or the Adult Standards range like WADV in Buffalo or the early WQBK 1300 and Old WNEW 1130?

Thanks

T.J.

The 1968 Broadcasting Yearbook says WDKC signed on in Fall 1967, is owned by Kops-Monahan Communications, is in stereo, and "programming separate from WTRY". Doesn't tell us much. WTRY in that era was in its hayday as a Top-40 rocker.

WDKC which became WTRY-FM about 1971, had separate programming from WTRY until 1971. WTRY was Top 40 R0ck, WDKC was big bands and standards. In 1971, when WDKC became WTRY-FM, The 2 stations were separate from 6AM to 6PM . From 6PM until 12M, the 2 were simulcast with the rock format. From 12M to 6 AM WDKC was off the air. At some time later, 106.5 was WHSH (wish). It was oldies for a while, later easy listening. Sometime around 1980, the WPYX call came along imaging itself as Albanys best rock and roll.

WDKC signed on in 1967 as an MOR station. It became WTRY-FM in 1971, MOR during the day, and Top 40 during the evening, simulcasting with WTRY-AM. It returned to full time MOR programming in 1972. It was sold in 1973, and became WHSH "The Albany Stereo Giant", "Wish" doing a hybrid Top 40/Oldies format with live jocks. In 1974, the jocks were blown off
(like a few months ago) and the station became automated Oldies. It flipped to beautiful music during Labor Day weekend in 1975. Five years later, it went AOR on September 15, 1980,
becoming WPYX a couple of weeks later....Until late April of this year, WPYX was a live 24/7 operation, but is now primarily voice tracked or syndicated with out of the market jocks...

Anyone remember SHO FM, WTRY's predecessor on 98.3? That was one fine oldies station. It had a fine variety including 50's.

SHO-FM was an absolutely amazing oldies station, by far the best that I have ever heard anywhere! They had a really deep 50s-70s playlist, they were live 24/7, and they kept Joel Whitburn's "Top 40 Hits" book in the studio, if listeners had any question about a song that was played. Imagine that now???? The station only existed from Septemeber, 1990 until November, 1991, as an Oldies station. It was a combination of WSHZ-98.3 and WSHQ-103.5. Ironically,
SHO-FM had replaced Oldies station 98.3-WNYJ in June, 1989 and had flipped to Hot A/C. The Hot A/C format was a disaster for them, which resulted in bankruptcy. They flipped back to Oldies in September, 1990. Unfortunately, one week later, big signaled 99.5-WGY-FM flipped to a tight Oldies format. In November, 1991 the owners of AM Oldies station WTRY-980, LMAed WSHZ-98.3, changing it to WTRY-FM and later purchased it. 103.5-WSHQ was flipped to A/C and was later purchased by the owners of WQBK-103.9, in 1994.
