WDKN

From jwk 1979
True, this subject has gone to TWO pages, but how many of these posts have anything to do with WDKN. It seems that a fairly good portion of the posts have to do with small AM stations in other towns and not so much about WDKN (namely a couple of station in Gallatin).

Dear Joe Will Kirkham. (have to make up a name since you won't use yours). Many of the stations in middle tennessee share similarities. 20 years ago they were all fully staffed and operating in the best interests of the local city/county/community. Broadcasters with an interest in radio are saddened by what has happened because these stations were the ones were we all started our journey. I'd never heard Gallatin/Dickson/Murfreesboro (insert your community) stations outside Nashville till I got in radio. But then, there was something special about them that you (I'm guessing) won't understand.

WDKN now one of many examples of an outdated media whos real estate is worth more than the value of the business by several times. Many AM stations now on the threshold of extinction as spectrum becomes a worthless transmission to nothing (no listners).

Just curious, has anyone listened to WDKN since they came back on the air last month?
Since I don't live in Dickson and very rarely venture into Dickson for anything, WDKN very rarely, if ever crosses my mind, let alone listen to it. And I'm sure a lot of people who post on this message board feel the same way.
Evidently, there ARE people here who are interested in WDKN and other stations like it.  This topic has now gone into two pages.  So you are wrong.  I wouldn't expect you to listen to them if you don't live in Dickson and hardly ever go there.

It looks like WDKN doing everything right.  They have no real competition from within the county, and they are 40 miles from Nashville.  They are live and local, and their website is impressive.  And you can listen online.  But I don't think they are on at night.

That said, though, I wouldn't have bought it, even if I could afford it, because I think that would be throwing good money after bad.

whats NOT to LOVE abt local radio? WDKN has it all: a duet of local d.j.s in the morning (canned laffs go here), followed by Swap n' Shop(who wants to buy my pig?) a midday request time (can i get a Tuna salad to go with my Tom T. Hall?) Traffic reports (do they have traffic tie-ups in Dickson?)..local Hi Skool ball games coverage (Go Dickson, Rah! Rah!) a Sports roundtable (are U listening Greg Pogue?) a Community Calendar (can i get my daughter's piano recital announced?), Saturday sports shows & on Sundays:every preacher in Dickson County is on thier schedule!...WOW!...i'm worn out thinking abt this station...

I didn't say I actually liked their programming. Then again, I don't live in Dickson County, and I'm not the one posting to message threads that had been dormant for three months! ::)

However Sgt....that's the Only place Dickson countians will get any local flavor. And football is one of the best sales tools in most small markets. I'll admit growing up in Nashville I was surprised at what I heard on Dickson radio when Karen and I got married (she's from Dickson) but after 5 years with the state network, local progrmming was working in most local markets. Locals all know the radio people on sight and by name and treat them with respect

Paying their bills? That's at any station. I've gone through that show for years. I learned this early on before I got into the "ownership" deal. I was told that most clients would pay all their other bills (the most important ones) before the Radio or TV ads or time was paid for. Not in all cases, but I've talked to some small business people in the past, and they would tell me their business was down so much that they would sit and try to figure out which bill should I skip paying this month?

It's not just the local AM stations that suffer, but many small businesses. This is a problem in many communities across the country. Some people tend to stub their noses at AM Stations, when in reality, there are more people listening to AM than what Arbitron is giving them credit for. I’ve noticed this in normal conversation with people I meet that I don’t even know. I pay Arbitron no attention.

When someone tells me “Nobody listens to that AM station”, they are lying! Why? Because they are the ones that are listening to that station themselves and they tend to know every move that AM station makes or plays over the air. It does pay off for advertising on all AM stations.

The President said before he took office almost one year ago that one of his main priorities was to get small businesses back on their feet again. I really have not seen any evidence of it. I guess the government has so many problems, they don't know which way to turn. 2009 has not been a good year for America's economy. That's why AM has suffered, but what business has not? Mr. Obama, are you listening to small business owners and their needs?

I wasn't AWARE that USING YOUR REAL NAME on this site was NOW A REQUIREMENT! When I first signed on and registered on this site (which was back in 2004), no one used their real names and ANONYMITY was quite ACCEPTABLE. I have noticed that a lot of other POSTERS on this site do not use their REAL NAMES either. Do you have a problem with those posters not using their real names as well? I NEVER recieved the memo from the owner/moderator of this message board that everyone must now use their REAL NAMES on this message board or be subjected to the WRATH of olebud!

So they ARE streaming their music content!!! That's interesting. Nobody else wants to go there. Tremendous royalty expense if you do it legally that is.
