WDKX Founder Andrew Langston Dies

Sorry indeed to hear of Mr. Langston's passing. A great broadcaster, respected throughout the industry by those who knew him. He'll always be remembered as a pioneer in Rochester radio history. My condolences to his family and the WDKX employees.

This is a huge loss to the community, we all owe him and his family thanks for carrying the torch of locally owned, locally based community service broadcasting.

Our condolences to his family on his passing. He and his contributions to the community won't be forgotten.

The good news is that the station he founded, WDKX, is now one of the most popular and successful stations in Rochester, with broad appeal to young listeners that cuts across all demographic lines. Mr. Langston's son, station manager Andre Marcel Langston, and his staff have done an excellent job in taking it to its current position and will certainly maintain the quality of service to the community, and challenge all of us in the business to do our best, for many years to come.

The example of WDKX is one that all radio broadcasters should study closely. A worthy life's work for Mr. Langston, his family and staff.

Well said Lee.

It is wonderful to read that the Langston family will continue to own WDKX instead of selling the station to one of the mega-media companies that currently monopolizes Rochester radio.

Reading the testimonials here and elsewhere, it's clear Mr. Langston and his family are to be admired and respected for their service, commitment and contributions to the community. And in the face of competition from the corporate giants, he didn't sell-out, literally and figuratively. Lee Rust's post is an excellent tribute. Mr. Langston established and left quite a legacy.

I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr Langston but have admired his community spirit for many years. I have met his son, Andre a few times. Andre is a great guy and I figure the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

There is no doubt the Langston's have weathered the storm. Every post below is SPOT ON!! My condolences to the family..a true loss to the legacy of radio...and an icon in his own right. I understand Andre is at the helm...and may the same passion prevail for the future.

If I may be so bold as to add my comments to this board...as a eulogy.

Going back the late 70's...the station serviced the urban community to it's fullest. I rode the "yellow submarines" to high school everyday. I "had" to listen to WDKX...by default. EVERYONE on the bus did!! They dominated the "yet to be established ghetto blaster" community...instilling their programming to everyone in the area (no offense intended - actually a positive note of phenomenon development)!! It was an amazing case of "marketing" if you will...rivaling even the bumper sticker campaigns at the time. They owned the "teen market" (maybe not according to ARB- but I sure knew it in school!). That was 30+ years ago!! It was done correctly..for their market. It was frustrating for a "radio geek" breaking in to the biz to understand....BUT hindsight being 20-20...DAMN...they hit their targets!!

Respectfully

HDBG
