WDLF Delightful 104.3

Hi all:
I used to live in the Foothills and remember when WDLF-FM signed on in Marion. It was a great station with its transmitter at the top of Wildcat Mtn. near Old Fort. It did a tremendous job covering Northwestern 4A sports and had great reach. Until the transmitter move, I could get it all the way up into the Wilkesboros, even as WMXF.

Could somebody post the history of this station from sign on through Blue Dolphin and Clear Channel?

The reason I thought about posting this today is I found a WMXF bumper sticker...

I don't know anything except I tried it while passing through one year and heard "Hold On My Heart" by Genesis, which at the time wasn't my idea of easy listening music. I still wanted the old WLOS back but I think WSPA could still be heard then in some places. WTFM had gone under by this time.

The letters WMXF do not have a positive meaning to me. While I enjoyed their music for years on the AM after the original station became Rock 104, Clear Channel seemed to think there was something wrong with WWNC's powerful signal (even at night) and did away with everything but the morning show for this upstart named Glenn Beck who I had never heard of (his name on the web site was the first proof that the station was gone), and Rush Limbaugh, who I had. So when I visit the mountains, if I want to turn on the radio and hear music, I'm pretty much limited to classic country during part of the day and classical music when I can get it.

TheBroker is a poster who lurks around here...I believe he has a pretty good grasp on the storied history of 104.3 from Old Fort to Fletcher. Jtudor also was there when it first went on the air - from 104 Brown Dr in downtown Marion. Probably my favorite era of this station was when it was Hot AC Mix 104 - they got a a great signal into Morganton, but a poor one into Asheville - which was where the better signal was desired.

I also remember being in my motel room when it was raining. This is important, because it seemed 104.3 FM could only be picked up there in bad weather. The signal isn't great even now, but it is more consistent.
