WDMS/WGVM Sold

From All-Access:

Mid-America Sells Greenville, MS Combo
MID-AMERICA BROADCASTING is selling Country WDMS (REAL COUNTRY 100.7) and Silent WGVM-A/GREENVILLE, MS to JOHN R. SALYER's WDMS, INC. for $780,000 cash.

If you've ever seen or heard it, it's a real fixer-upper!

Now those are stations worth fixing up for. I wish the new owner lots of luck in keep the maintenance of the stations. It will do just fine.

was there really an advatage to making WDMS 100K other than the light bill? The coverage seems to have changed very little IMHO since its on a short stick. i would have tried to get over on the XVT tower so the signal could cover the whole market but then i bet you would need a null to the n/e for WBLE which wouldn't hurt in any way since there isnt much money or population in that general direction

Was a good operation at one time, but the last time I was in the Delta was 1978. Here's my Greenville story: I was just graduating high school in Indianola.....stopped by the Greenville stations looking for a part time/summer job. The folks at WJPR (WNIX) turned me down, Dan Dymond at WDDT told me to get lost. And then, there was WGVM/WDMS. I think the guy's name was Joe. Told me I sounded too much like a yankee, and that "folks around here want to listen to one of their own". Suggested I might do better working at a gas station. Then I returned home that afternoon and got a call from George Klein at WHBQ...got 6 weeks of summer relief in Memphis. I sent all the radio folks in Greenville a nice note..........on RKO/WHBQ stationary....what a great way to start a resume!

thats a good story...

I work in the gaming industry these days and get asked often "are you in vegas?" of course I know they know the answer before they even asked.

Fellas, you shudda heard GVM and DDT in the late fifties...they both did and excellent job and some great jocks kept the seats warm in those years...sad.

Were one of them known as "The Radio"? At that time I thought that was one of the coolest identifiers around. It was like "This is CNN" but in the delta.

I worked at KUUZ with studios in Greenville and the tower in Lake Village. It was around 90-91 or so. The strangest thing I ever heard was a guy named Charile something or other trying to interact with the sat feed on WDMS in the morning. In fact I took the guy's place at KUUZ. It was pretty wild! The sat jock would say something and Charlie would try and answer him. Randy Pinkston was the PD in recent years. Worked with him at WXVT. Anyone know where he is these days?

WGVM/WDMS was a very neat and tidy place back in the mid-70's. I remember they had Sparta consoles, and you could see the transmitter through the control room window. Collins, maybe... it had a window on the front and you could see the tubes.
Typical country; drinkin', lyin', cheatin' songs, with the "gospel song of the hour" to balance it out.
