WDNC/Z

Well, after reviewing the ratings, it is official. WDNC/Z is not going anywhere. WCHL playing on a weak channel out of Chapel Hill is pulling in higher numbers than a simulcast covering a major swath of the triangle with good signal quality. What is going on? When will Curtis give up on its vanity station, WDNZ? State government radio my arse...

I don't see how RDU can benefit from ANOTHER AM talker, unless it does something really different, like full-time 'progressive' talk. What could be done with the AM simulcast? It would have to be niche programming like Adult Standards or Southern Gospel. What would you guys suggest?

But DNZ already has talkshows that aren't real mainstream, or at least aren't heard around here. Enough local stuff, as well.

Enough spanish, as well; the religious RTPS were knocked out a while back, If anything, perhaps they're next.

WDNZ and WCHL have a little overlap but full time Progressive talk might work- but it might not too...Are there enough lefties at State, Shaw, Meredith etc. to support? WCHL is very Chapel Hill oriented and plays only a few select liberal talkers- not a full time talker, this is where DNZ *might* get some ratings. Turn on the light in the morning and play syndicated libtalk all day. Save money not producing that drivel in the morning or play it on WDNC weekends.

But I doubt Curtis would do this. Maybe alt country. No- too edgy. All news would be nice, but AP is going the way of the dodo bird. What is left? More of the same, tsk. Two hours of morning propaganda followed by a simulcast that doesn't add any potential listeners. The two frequencies WDNC and WDNZ 90% overlap one another. Maybe some people in southeast Wake would choose Z over C but not many...

With all due respect, you guys just don't get it! It isn't about ratings for these small stations - it's about money. Stations like WCHL, WDNC, etc. don't have enough signal to cover the metro, and therefore have no chance at being ratings successes.

What they can do is serve a nitch audience and generate revenue from those advertisers who target the nitch audience.

Take WCHL, why should a small retail business in Chapel Hill pay the market's going rate to advertise to Raleigh and Durham - when it is only realistic that their customers will come from within a few miles?

The other source is the vanity show - people will pay good money to have their own radio show. There are doctors who get tons of money from drug companies to "speak" on their behalf. Lots of them spend it on the radio, doing health shows. And the personal finance guys -- they make millions managing money and they attract more investors by giving free advice!

The station that isn't concerned about ratings can make a decent living on the vanity radio guys, the small "local" advertiser - and by super serving the nitch audience.

Meredith's commencement speaker was Renee Montagne. I did a story on a Meredith freshmen who made a prom dress out of duct tape. It's anecdtoal, but there are some "free thinkers" there.

CNN Radio is still around and will probably benefit greatly from the demise of AP radio.

As far as the current format, there's only one government news radio station that seems to be making a living, and it's located in DC and was incubated by the WTOP news monster. I would suggest a switch to broker block format.
