WDNY- AM Format Change

Don Niles said:
In reality,I think the new WDNY AM Format is fantastic...A live local morning show with community involvement, remotes, and Facebook promotions are probably keys to great success...Like the appearance at the Wayland Potato Festival..

Thanks Don. I've been operating WDNY since last November, and have been really working hard to keep us relevant as a live, local medium. If you asked about WDNY's competitors 5 years ago, it would be a very different set than today. Now, we compete against Pandora, iPods, Satellite Radio, and larger market radio for listener attention. Being live, local, and involved is what makes us relevant and stand out.

As most other small market operators will attest to, budgets really dictate how much live content we can have on the air. We run a live morning show, and use local music programming for the FM. The AM is on the bird for most of the day, although we are looking at some live programming and VoiceTracking in the future. With consolidation by larger operators such as Clear Channel's Premium Choice, we are likely even more local than some of their outlets.

Thanks for the note. I will share it with our staff.

If I lived up there again, which is out of the question, I would sure love to work there in some
capacity.
I think it's great that there's still some interest with stations 'in the land of the kilohertz'. IMNSHO I'd like to see more of is more niche and unconventional programming on smaller outlets.

I haven't been up there since 1994 before the 94.1 in Rochester signed on...That must really hamper the 93.9 signal.....During the WYSL 1400 Buffalo heyday, I never dreamed there would be a 1400 in Dansville..I heard the story about the 880 watt day/1000 night patterns...Maybe the only station in the country to increase power at night.
There are NUMEROUS stations which have a power boost at night. One of the most notable is Chicago's WNTD at 950 kHz. It is licensed for 1,000 day and 5,000 directional at night. It also has separate day and nighttime transmitters. Another notable example, KFMB (760 kHz) in San Diego has a daytime ERP of 5,000 and a nighttime of 50,000 directional. Its nighttime signal can be heard from La Paz, Mexico up to Seattle Washington. That's just for starters.

I agree about the Live and Local Morning and afternoon drives....I don't recall that many people listening to CKLW up there....But they sure listened to BBF and KB and maybe later WAXC...Any way to evoke memories from those days could only help.

Throw in "Give me One More Chance" by Wilmer and the Dukes and "Give Me One More Chance" by the Rustix...also Joey Reynolds "Rats In My Room".
If you're an AM operator in today's day and age, you'd better damned well innovate! I think it's ESSENTIAL that you play music that the mainstream FM stations won't touch with a 20' pole! If you don't do this, you can almost be guaranteed that your station will not survive!

As far as the standards format goes, my friends here in Warsaw catch what they can from CFZM, even though they have been toying with that since thier last ownership change.

Brian, you have done a great job with these two radio stations and the digital angle you have added. I was VERY CLOSE to buying these stations, so you may know who I am. Mark was a great guy to deal with, but as the recession hit, i got a little antsy, but we were in the final stage, as you may know. They were really struggling with identity and relevance at the time. You have done a really good job. Hopefully, the sales effort is kicking in a little, as it was not back then. These are two nice small market stations, and you are doing just what you need to do! Keep it up.
