WDOD Chattanooga reimages as "Hits 96"

Today, CHR WDOD Chattanooga dropped their longtime "96-5 The Mountain" handle to become "Hits 96". They had previously kept the Mountain name after flipping from AAA to CHR 4 years ago. The new website & logo are up at www.hits96.com.

Buhhh ... why do some stations do this? Note: When you keep your format and change your name, nobody will refer to you by your new name. It never, never, never works. It would be like McDonald's keeping its menu and suddenly changing its name to Fast Foodville. Ain't gonna stick.

Why the name change after so long?

Also has anyone noticed the logo looks just like 100.3 Fresh in Detriot? Only in a different pattern but same colors.

Who knows, maybe they now want to solidify their position as a CHR and drop the past baggage that "The Mountain" handle had.

On a related note, maybe they can dump the WDOD-FM call letters as well (WHZS is available, according to the FCC).

To me, "The Mountain" didn't sound very CHR, especially a Rhythmic-leaning CHR - I'm surprised it took so long for them to change the name

Personally, I liked the name The Mountain b/c it relates well to the market. Just like 107.5 The River is appropriate for a market (Nashville) where you have the Cumberland River running right through downtown, it's also appropriate to have a CHR called The Mountain in a market where you have Lookout Mountain from which you can view 7 states. I mean, Chattanooga is a very scenic city, its downtown has largely been reinvigorated in the past 5-10 years, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to go on vacation. Oh yeah, there's also Signal Mountain.
When you actually go up these mountains the Atlanta stations oftentimes come in like local stations so its fairly easy to pick up Q-100 in some parts of Chattanooga 8)

ShawtyBlack: They've had Kiss as a competitor for about 18 months. Although they topped 96.5 in the Summer, 2010 ratings, Kiss has since slip to 9th place while 96.5 went to 6th 12+.

CHRles: While I agree with you about how The Mountain moniker nicely ties in to the market, the problem is that it was used for 12 years when they were AAA and almost 3 years as a CHR, which would lead to some audience confusion on who they are now. The name change would allow the station to solidify their position in the market as a station that plays hit music, especially since they are now dealing with Kiss Version 2.0 for the CHR audience in the market.

BTW: It's interesting that you brought up 107.5 The River. That station has never had the problem that 96.5 The Mountain has had in going directly from one format to another. The River originally signed on as a Hot AC-leaning CHR, which over time transitioned to Mainstream CHR while The Mountain went directly from Triple A to CHR.

WDOD went CHR because Clear Channel flipped their CHR they had a couple years ago in the market to Classic Country. Now Clear Channel saw how good WDOD was doing with the format CC decided to bring back CHR in the market.

Also agree this area is a nice place to vist with great views. Real nice during the fall months.

Yea Kiss flipped to country on my birthday around the time i was born but like obviously years later. that sucked. worst birthday present ever. glad they're back. I like the mountain though Ill still listen. I do hope that AAA comes back to Chattanooga Market. somehow while leaving Kiss & Hits together and all the other formats entact.

Yeah, I don't really understand where all the AAA listeners went when WDOD flipped, cause their Triple A ratings were moderately high (I think), and the market doesn't have a Hot AC or a AAA - just seems weird IMO that AAA listeners would've been absorbed by a Rhythmic-leaning CHR

EDIT: Just checked and they have a low-rated HAC now - I'm almost positive they went a couple years without one though
