WDOK vs. The Wave

Just looked at the comments on their web site and they are NOT ammused with the changes. They all seem to think that Trapper is gone. I didn't listen this morning so I don't know about that but they are mad!

WDOK has 60+ years of name recognition in the market (23 years or so as a soft AC/soft rocker after PD Sue Wilson took it "out of the elevator") that CBS is simply throwing out the window.

This flip (if it indeed is one) is unnecessary. IMO, they could have graduated WDOK to a more youthful sound without torching brand equity.

I highly doubt that Dave Popovich wanted to do this. It smacks of a pure budget slashing on CBS' part.

I just tried to pull up their playlist on Yes.com and they don't recognize WDOK?! Could their programming be coming from elsewhere and not be encoded? Interesting.

Nearly all Cleveland stations (WQAL, WDOK, WNCX, WHLK, WMJI) have been 'dropped' from yes i. the last few weeks

Judging by the comments that were posted on WDOK's website at the time that Trapper Jack, Terri, and Jim would have otherwise been on the air, it sounds like they just had piped-in music playing instead of the live morning show. I, too did hear the sweepers for 'The New 102'

Was just listening to WDOK and it sure sounds like stunting to me. They are playing a bunch of songs, albeit AC songs that are about saying goodbye, such as 'Don't You Forget About Me' by Simple Minds, 'When You're Gone' by Matchbox 20, 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' by Elton John/George Michael, 'Against All Odds' by Phil Collins to name a few. No Delilah Show on tonight either. Just a male voice that says 'The New 102 is coming' after every couple of songs.

I've been told by a few close to the situation that Trapper Jack is under contract through 2012, but it's not at all a given that he returns.

Consider: the station is actively promoting "New 102", and is all but stopping people on Euclid Avenue asking them what they want in a radio station. Gee, could those people possibly want what CBS Radio has already researched ahd decided to do? ;)

One way or other, "WDOK" is dead. They'll probably start legitimately stunting as "New 102", and then move to one of CBS' existing "hot" music brands ("Fresh"? Just a guess!).

I find it hard to imagine a scenario where "Fresh 102", or whatever the station ends up doing, has Trapper Jack in the morning...so my guess, and it's only an educated guess at this point (I'm not hearing it rumored, yet) is that they buy out Trapper Jack.

After all, if you don't renew the contract of the woman who has basically been the face of your station (WDOK's Nancy Alden) for over 20 years, how could there be any interest in hanging onto Trapper Jack?

Where does Nancy land? There's a lot of connections between her and Rubber City Radio, which literally just restarted "The Wave".

* One of her WDOK PDs, Sue Wilson, programs WQMX, literally just across the hall from Studio C at West Market Street (Akron home of 107.3 until it moves north).
* RCRG VP Nick Anthony, one of the driving forces of the new station, was her PD at WKDD.
* Dan Deely (AMD) and Bobby Thomas (PMD) worked with her at WDOK.

And I'm sure I'm missing something.

Now, 107.3's lineup is all set, though only Lynn Kelly is not live (6-mid) and is VTing as a second job to her main gig as WQMX's midday host. Maybe they'll make some accomodation and shorten Lynn's 6 hour VT shift, or get Nancy on somewhere.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen, though I'm hearing nothing from West Market Street to indicate it's in the works yet.

Middays would be the obvious choice if 107.3 wanted to strike re: Nancy Alden. But I have a hard time seeing them moving Mark Ribbins, a key player because of his bridge from the "old" Wave to the "new" Wave.

If this had happened before they hired Mark, it'd be a no brainer.

From the WDOK Facebook page: (from about 9am on 1-5-12)

102.1 WDOK Hey Nancy! We love both Nancy & Delilah, but they'll no longer be with us. We haven't changed formats for good - the all music playlist is just here while we freshen up to the NEW 102...stay tuned...

102.1 WDOK We appreciate you being such a long time listener to the station and to the morning show, Kathleen! We hope you'll give Trapper a try on the NEW 102 and in the meantime if you want to leave more feedback for the station you can do so on our website here: http://wdok.radio.com/wdok-feedback/ (From about 4pm on 1-5-12)

So Nancy & Delilah are gone from WDOK but Trapper will be returning whenever the 'NEW 102' launches from what the station is indicating as of now.

I don't know. I'm hearing so many conflicted stories right now, it wouldn't be shocking that what's being posted on FB is a red herring.

Very possible that JUST Trapper Jack returns... but not Jim McIntrye or Terry Moir. And Desiray, if she does return, might have to voice-track.

Or none of them return, and WDOK is totally blown up for "Fresh 102."

I have a bad feeling none of them know their fates as we speak. Being told to stay home for a week does NOT bode well.

I did hear sweepers for The New 102. Sounds like a new station is coming to WDOK.

Is this why they branded themselves as "Christmas 102.1" during the Christmas music season?

This doesn't appear to be a CBS Cleveland decision. Rather, it's coming all the way from CBS Radio HQ in New York City. CBS will soon be making significant cuts at markets around the country, most notably in Cleveland, Las Vegas and San Diego (where reportedly one firm is interested in buying all three clusters, but at dramatic mark-downs).

"Christmas 102.1" was obviously done here, and WDOK was already in the middle of a subtle re-branding. Heck, there was a brand new "102.1 WDOK" sign placed outside the One Radio Lane studios just last month.

You just don't do that, and then scrap it all for "Fresh 102." Unless the decision is made outside of your own hands.

Man, those are angry listeners on WDOK's FB page. A lot of them are not confident about the station and they're vowing to leave the station too.

I noticed on their website that the "More Music. Better Variety." slogan has been scrapped from their website. Yet, it's still on the new sign outside their studios.

It will be interesting to hear what happens with "The New 102." I have been hearing more from the 90's, 2000's and present, along with a few 80's and very, very little 70's.

Hot AC at WDOK with Modern AC at WQAL?

I enjoy reading the threats that people make. "I am NEVER LISTENING to your station again" You fired so and so and I am never listening again. Note to those people writing on facebook. They couldn't care less what you think stop wasting your time writing on a facebook page that an intern most likely answers.
