WDOX & WSJQ

It was a sad day for Alternative Rock fans everywhere when WDOX signed off its online webcast at the end of August, in a week that was filled with a series of unfortunate events. Coincidentally, it came right around the time that WOXY.com announced that their webcast would cease to exist also. WDOX will definitely be missed - in an industry filled with safe, sound-alike stations that appeal more to advertisers than listeners (is it any wonder why ratings have dropped at some Alternative stations? THAT is the reason why), WDOX was always interesting ... you never knew what to expect when you turned the station on. I think there's a lot of stations that can learn from the diverse approach of WDOX - despite its low overhead, one can only wonder what its ratings would have been if it had a decent signal. I think they would easily be capable of topping SoJo with their bland, unoriginal programming, that's for sure. R.I.P. WDOX - you will be missed.

Meanwhile. let's look at the station that took the place of WDOX at 106.7 on the FM dial, CHR WSJQ (Q 107)? This station has resided in the ratings cellar ever since its launch (an 0.4 in the last book, half of WDOX's ratings at their worst), and only a hardcore optimist could expect things to improve. Those seeking hit music already have numerous choices: WSTW comes in perfectly in the area that WSJQ covers, and you could also flip between WAYV/WAIV and WGBZ/WZBZ (The Buzz) for the same effect. I was in Wildwood a couple of weeks ago, and absolutely NO ONE was listening to this station. The most popular stations were as follows: The Buzz, WAYV, and WZXL - I even heard WJSE in a few places. WDOX was always among the most played stations on the boardwalk - apparently not only did Coastal Broadcasting alienate the old audience with this "hit music" they play now, but they have failed to attract a new audience. Anyone else agree with me that this station is going nowhere fast? If Coastal were smart, they would have DOX return for the third time at 106.7 FM. It would be the market's only Alternative, as opposed to all the "hit music" choices already available to the market. Sure, WJSE is a great station, but it's more of an Active/Alternative hybrid - WDOX would pick up right where they left off since they're already established in the market. This is a no-brainer - it's a move that Coastal should have made yesterday.

Same complaint, different station.

Enough already.

These boards are for discussion of the radio industry, Beejus. Whether it's the programming, the signal, the needs of a market, or anything else you could think of, it should all be open for discussion. That's what keeps us all coming back, regardless of whether we work in the industry or not.

WSJQ is really a useless station when you get down to it. It appeals to a very young audience, one that is already listening to either The Buzz or WSTW. Coastal Broadcasting has given it some time, and the ratings are poor. No one was listening to Q 107 when I was on the boardwalk in Wildwood, for what it's worth. I find it hard to believe that this station would be a financial success of any kind, unless it has really low overhead. Maybe it targets a desired demographic, but the demographic in question is already very well served. I personally would rather go after the underserved audience, even if they have less disposible income. I'm sure Coastal wouldn't have gone with a CHR format if they weren't expecting better ratings/billing than what WDOX was doing, but look at how it has performed - much worse than DOX even at their weakest.

The format isn't working, bottom line. Maybe I'm hoping for the return of WDOX since I'm a fan of the Alternative format, but really, what other format could the market use? Perhaps Smooth Jazz or Adult Standards might not be a bad idea, but the former was pulling disappointing ratings (it was on 102.3 at one time, right?), and the latter wouldn't be a good choice because the frequency doesn't cover the northern half of the market (where most of the demo for the format lives). Besides, WDOX ran for nearly 10 years in its two incarnations, and it would be easier to bring it back than to build a new station from the ground up.

I understand that these boards are here for radio discussion, that's why I'm here too. But every single one of your posts [EDIT] how all the radio stations don't serve your specific needs, very thinly veiled. I pointed out in a different thread... bitching about it here won't do anything. Write a letter to the head of the companies and talk directly to them. Because I can assure you they don't give a rat's ass about one person's consistant complaining on a messageboard.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

Now you're being judgmental. You can't comment because you haven't seen every single one of my posts. For the record, I post in several forums. If you think every one of my posts is a gripe, you clearly have only read a few of them. Yes, maybe I critique (or "bitch", to use your parlance) more than the average person, but if you think that I'm the only person that has criticized a station's programming, presentation, etc., then you clearly have not been here very long.

Maybe you are right, but these are topics that I enjoy discussing from time to time. I read those exact types of discussions on the old board - that was why I signed up. The other benefit of discussing these topics on a forum is to find a bunch of like-minded people, and then collectively contact a radio station to recommend changes. I will have fewer critiques, as things are starting to pick up at my office, but there were certain things that I felt needed to be addressed. That's all.
