WDRD Has A New Owner

I mentioned the call letter change earlier in another post...WDRD is too close to WKRD and WDRB for marketing and ratings purposes. I'm glad to see United close on the station.

They're really making programming strides, and I am very happy they're taking WW1, ESPN and Reds Radio Network play-by-play of NBA, NCAA and MLB. It appears they're even employing a live board op to properly run the games and not depending on the automation to catch the varied break timing.

I still prefer ESPN programming over the "frat party with an open mike" Fox Sports style. ESPN is heavy on discussion and analysis, while Fox is either smart-alecky, screaming at the top of their lungs, or spinning out of control (Dan Patrick and Tony Bruno are the only two Fox hosts I can stomach, and even the manic JT The Brick has toned himself down lately).

Something's mighty wrong...they've been off the air with carrier only since late yesterday afternoon. They missed all of the Westwood One men's NCAA Division 1 basketball championship broadcast feed. This is truly an unfortunate and embarrasing turn of events for the station's efforts to build an audience. Personally, I'm hoping they make significant inroads into CC's WKRD-AM ratings!

Perhaps the severe weather took out their radio STL and there was no land line back up, either balanced or POTS...anything to provide some audio to the transmission plant on Mud Lane. I'm not sure if they use microwave or land line links-I'll check their auxillary licenses, if any.

The timing WAS awful! We have a T1 from studio to transmitter. HAS to be T1 because the dish is at the transmitter and audio goes both ways through the link.

The storm popped a breaker and froze the T1. We got power back on but were at the mercy of AT&T to restore the T1.

Sorry we were off but glad to be missed.

Love the station and the hosts. I was listening to my favorite team, the Reds, on Sunday, and I assume you guys automate it because I was hearing double audio quite a bit during some breaks along with some dead air. This could have been a network error though.

You had program audio available at the transmitter site but couldn't get it on the air for over 24 hours? ??? Dude!!

Is there nobody at that station that asked, "What can we do to get something on the air?"

Sounds like possibly time for a backup automation PC at the transmitter site that can put the network on air from the tx site in a situation when the STL is down.

Where is Reds baseball tonight guys? Pregame was at 9:35 P.M. and game time at 10:05 P.M. Glad The Reds are on 680, but you guys keep dropping the ball (no pun intended) getting the games on at the correct time. Sunday's game was on late too.
Just checked around 11:05 P.M. and the game is finally on. Thank you!!!

Last night during the local breaks in the Reds game, the feed from the Reds network was left on. Double audio!
I heard that too. Seems they were simulcasting 700 WLW. (I heard the WLW ID a few times) And the audio didn't seem totally clear. Whenever there was a break, the 680 commercials were played on top of the ones from 700. After the game,680 went back to ESPN Radio. They didn't air the post game show.

I would think it would be wise to have a board op or intern run the games instead of the automation to keep the advertisers happy.

I know of a station that uses a couple of high school kids. Lets face it, a lot of the school age kids know more about computers than many experienced Radio people. BTW keep them under 30 hours and you do not have to pay unemployment tax in most states. I am not too sure about KY. and the 30 or 32 hour rule.

I know an experienced board op who used to run the Bats on WGTK for several years until he went into TV production. Give me a shout on the private message thread if you'd like his referral.

First of all thank you for listening to the Reds. Second, my apologies for some of the struggles so far in our coverage.

Sunday the 10th we installed a new board to our control room. The leftover board we inherited from Disney wasn't suitable for running live programming and we felt like we were running on strings and duct tape some of the time just to bring a listenable show to the airwaves. Once the new board was installed we knew there would be some bugs that we wouldn't know of until they happened. Reds baseball unfortunately was one of those. The network doesn't send down sound 24/7 and we didn't think the Reds would be one of the problems we encountered until 5 minutes before pregame when no sound came down the line. Clearly it was a problem in our connecting our new board and we needed to connect to a coupler through the phone, hence the simulcasting and the lower sound quality. The coupler was used Monday the 11th and Tuesday the 12th. We have been up and running off the network since.

As for the spots and the overall "cleanliness" of the broadcast, we have new board ops that had been running Bellarmine games and we felt comfortable with them to run the Reds. Clearly the beginning of the season we ran into a few mishaps and they have been re-trained and we hope you continue to listen to the station and know we are committed to the professionalism of running a radio station the way it is supposed to be run.

We are still a start up, but feel we've made strides over the past few months and will continue in the months and years to come. You will know that the Reds will be with us along with MLB playoffs, NFL playoffs, NCAA tournament, Triple Crown and NBA Finals.

Again thanks for listening and understanding early here in the Reds season.

Thanks for the information Jason. I have noticed an overall improvement of ESPN 680 lately. I'm glad to hear that you are committed to making 680 a great sports station for Louisville. I believe that you are well on your way to doing that!
BTW, I enjoy all of the local shows on 680 (including yours). I think that with all of the local programming ESPN 680 will be a success.
