WDUN loses Georgia football

WWID-FM was purchased from Jacob in the eearly 80s by Katz Broadcasting, the radio arm of the Katz rep firm. Katz Broadcasting was bought out in a leveraged buyout by its employees and formed as NewCity Communications. Some while later, NewCity sold WYAY-FM to CapitalCities Communications. Not long thereafter, the remainder of NewCity was sold to Cox Communications.

Cox probably wanted UGA sports to be on all their big stations in Athens. It is already exposed well, with most of the games on either WRFC/WGAU or WNGC (and that new 103.7). WDUN does have a big signal, and has more local talk shows than WSB (Neil and Clark are national, of course).

Georgia Tech sports would be a good fit for 550, with their big signal, and with the way they're playing, they'll be good for years to come. 1240 could perhaps pick up Clemson games (they are the 3rd-most followed behind Georgia/GT in your area), and you could split the Tech/Clemson rights between 550-1240.

UGA is on WNGC/WRFC and 103.7/100.1 in Athens,WGAU carries the Braves and so does 960 when there isn't a conflict with UGA. WNGC has Nascar but in couple of weeks they will conflict with UGA. As for 550 I don't know if they will pick up Tech or Clemson,Tech really doesn't need them now that they are on WYAY,i wonder if that will affect Tech's deal with South 107.

South 107 really fills in the NW quadrant nicely...there are a lot of Jackets fans up I-75 and 106.7 doesn't reach that far. So hopefully not.

There is, however, another bit of poetic justice at work here. The big bad dog-bite on WDUN's butt comes right from the play-book of the conservative talkers that WDUN spews all day long. Unfettered free enterprise knows what's best for America. Sympathy and tradition is something from the liberals play-book. So, as the preacher once told me, "Be careful what you pray for. You might just get it." I guess the decision makers of Bull Dog nation are disciples of Limbaugh and other talkers. So, WDUN, welcome to conservative thinking at work.

Woah. Where was the ramp that lead to THAT jump??

GRC, the broadcast rights for UGA sports (and other colleges, I'm guessing) are owned by a company called ISP. Apparently Cox was a more attractive option than Jacobs, for whatever reason. That's simple business, conservative, liberal or indifferent.

WDUN loosing UGA is mainly from 103.7 becoming a Gainesville station, and WNGC moving its COL to Arcade. ISP and UGA are changing alot of things that we got use to in the past when it comes to Georgia sports... But it's safe to assume Cox stations will get the special treatment over other radio companies.

It's only natural that Cox will get top treatment since the flagship station is owned by Cox. There are alot of changes to UGA football this year, one being that David Greene and David Polliack will join the broadcasting team. The 5th quatershow wich was heard exclisively on WNGC in Athens will move from Applebee's on Atlanta Highway to a hotel in downtown Athens.

That could not be more wrong.

The 5th quarter show(the same 5th quarter that has always been on WNGC) will still be broadcast out of Applebee's and carried on WNGC, WRFC and WXKT.

The new (ripped off horrible version of the 5th quarter show) will be from that hotel and carried on the other network stations.

I guess ISP couldn;t up with an original idea so they had to steal that from the locals guys up in Athens.

I stand corrected, that is good I like the 5th Quarter show on WNGC,dave Johnstone from 960 is very knowledgeable, the way he and Kevin Butler play off each other is awsome.

On the other hand, there was a sale and swapping of frequencies about 10 years ago. There is poetic justice, sweet or sour, in the idea that the WDUN folks make an interesting business decision back then. Isn't the current frequency of WNGC the frequency once owned by the Jacobs family and operated from the WDUN facility in Gainesville?

No.

The current frequency of WNGC isn't the frequency once owned by the Jacobs family and operated from the WDUN facility in Gainesville.

Insert poetic justice [ here ].

WDUN and (maybe) WCON aren't the only longtime UGA affiliates that won't be carrying the Bulldogs this season.

There are a few more than a few around the state, and it has little, if anything, to do with exclusivity.

I'll likely have much more to say about the subject in a few days.

Stay tuned.

WCON-fm has also been with UGA a long time,I know for awhile 92.5 The Bear in Grffin had UGA Football because the station was and I think still is owned by Fran Trakenton's brother.
