WDUR, Durham sold

WDUR, 1490 AM, once a Top 40 outlet known as WSSB but best known in recent years for simulcast partners including WFXC, WNNL, the former WTRG and WTSB, has been sold to Prieto Broadcasting for $900,000, according to allaccess.com. Prieto is the owner of WETC, 540 AM in Wendell-Zebulon. Currently, WETC simulcasts its Spanish language programming, called "La Regia" on Durham's WTIK, 1310 AM.

::) WSSB was owned by John Woods in the 70's who also owned WTOB and WRUN Utica, NY...He drove WTOB into the ground , I didn't think WSSB could go any lower, but By God it has!!! APE!

And Durham's most historic radio building, at 1826 Nixon Street, continues to crumble and decay.

Later....

Whatever happened to John and Kay Woods and the rest of the circus..Sons, daughters, stepsons, monsters...John is probably dead? don't know? Does anybody?

I was in Durham this weekend and 1490 transmitted a dead carrier both days I was there, with no ID at the top of the hour. Guess they are "killing" things off for the new????

1490 has been broadcasting irregularly for a while now.
Two days off ain't unheard of since TSB bailed on it. ;)
1090 seemed to be "on" more than 1490 did during the selling period.

We might see Prieto cease the LMA with Davidson and switch the WETC simulcast from WTIK to WDUR, although the WTIK 5 kW daytime signal is superior to that of WDUR.

Is it possible for "them" to broadcast (for example...) WRAL's HD News Channel signal on WDUR? or Broadcast CNN Headline News?

I think this area could support a station of Local/National News (and maybe Sports) ???

Thanks,
Stuart

Capitol did do something similar during the last portion of their LMA with then Herald-Sun-owned WDNC in the mid-1990s. It used the AP's all news format, mixed with some NCNN, WRAL-TV and other local content. They called it "The News Station." Of course, the station's sports programming (Blue Devils, Bulls, et. al.) continued as well. This was no WTOP or WCBS, though. It was part of a short-lived trend in the 1990s where TV stations extended their news brand to a local AM broadcaster (WXII-TV in Winston-Salem did this with the purchase of AM 830...which became Newsradio 830 WXII) It didn't work so hot for CBC as I recall; CBC got out of the LMA in 1997 due to lack of profitability and Curtis assumed control of the station, buying it outright in 2000. I believe AP discontinued their "News Station" feed as well. While I'd love to see an all-news format around here, I don't know if the market would support it, and it would be costly to do right. All news formats are highly rare outside of the top markets, and many of those stations now supplant their all-news format wheel with live sports broadcasts.

Yeah word on the streets and in some job postings say it's going to be sports, but there's always the outside chance..... [/rumor mill]
