WDUV...why is it always top-rated?

MsMusicRadio said:
Beside Wilson Pickett, they play Fogerty and Boy George. Didja ever think WDUV is really a big joke on the radio audience?

WDUV plays alot of music that I don't consider "Relaxing Easy Favorites". Much of the music you described is border line classic hits which is not "Relaxing and Easy". There's nothing wrong with classic hits. I just think it's misleading to call it "easy" when in reality it is bordering on "classic hits". Call it what it is.

I never meant to imply they said the words beautiful music but their delivery on the liners is very much like the old style beautiful music liners.

I like you explanation, it makes the most sense to me! ...and now with more relaxing EZ music here's AC/DC......

That's almost like saying in a very Perry Como style voice inflection "Relax where it's always bright and beautiful" followed by Ozzie Osbourne or Blue Cheer. To say the least, that would make for interesting radio.

The PPM has elevated Q105 and WXGL to "winner" status. That implies "classic hits" is the best formala to have at this time. WDUV is edging toward Eagle music, although they play a lot more Motown as the Eagle plays none. Maybe Cox sells them as a package with the Bone. Soft to Hard classic hits in a package.

As JM Tillery has said, WDUV is anything but "Relaxing Easy Favorites". They have a monopoly to the extent that they are still (slightly) more inclined to play easy music, but the mix is leaning more and more towards Motown, Eagles, and the like. I would think that the more they move in this direction, the greater the risk they take in having some other station flip formats to compete with them.

1) Maybe what they are playing is today's easy favorites. Back in the day going to the doctor meant Muzak or B/EZ. Now it is WDUV or even WXGL. I was treated to the Eagle while having a bone scan

2) WDUV played Neil Young around Noon today. No way Neil Young is an EZ Favorite, even if it is one of his more ballady recordings. If Neil Young is now B/EZ-----I think that is a sign of the apocalypse.

3) If somebody flipped to compete with WDUV, Cox has the Eagle for protection. This could be an opportunity for WSJT to be a true Soft AC if they could get it together like CBS has done with The Wave in LA.

Since WDUV is only 14th in billing, it's unlikely that anyone will flip to fragment what is not enough revenue for two to survive on. Even as the station moves more 60's as the older audience is reduced by the actuarial tables it is still very much for people predominantly in their 60's and 70's, which is not a great sales demo anywhere.

Doesn't COX sell them all as a group spanning decades from the sixties till today?

They may package them as a demographic spectrum, but most clients don't buy that way.

CLients that buy by ratings don't look at the era or age of the music, just the age of the listener.

Based on an average of April, May and June PPMs, WDUV is 12th in 25-54. It is 14th in 25-49 and 23th in 35-44. In 35-64 it is 4th, and 1st in over-55 and over 65.

I'm going to jump back a few weeks here. Can someone explain to me how it is possible for a station that is ranked 1st overall in PPM to be only #12 in 25-54? This would indicate that the 25-54 age group makes up only a very very tiny percentage of the overall Tampa listening audience, wouldn't it? I posted this same question a few weeks ago but no one answered it...am I missing something really obvious here?

It really is as simple as it looks. The vast majority of their listeners are over 55.

KDKA in Pittsburgh was at or near #1 in the market for years, and their mid-day shows had a 1-share 25-54.

Not at all. The people under 55 have 11 other stations that they like better. Again, it really is that simple.

Did you mean to say the vast majority of TAMPA listeners are over 55? Then, that would explain the fact that WDUV is ranked #1 among ALL listeners in Tampa. Otherwise, I'm still not getting it.

The Tampa market skews old. I don't have the numbers but I know some of our consultant friends do.

So:
a) There are more over-55 listeners in Tampa than in some other markets (such as Orlando, where the average age is in the 30's).

2) Those over 55 folks strongly prefer WDUV, and listen to it all day.

Remember, the ratings are not just a head count, they are comprised of number of people and time spent listening. For example, FLZ has the highest cume in the market but WDUV has better time Spent Listening (which has a new name under PPM that I don't recall right now)

There is a station here in Columbia South Carolina that mirrors the Dove. WWNU 92.1...they call it Carolina 92.1 Lite Relaxing...Easy Favorites. They just flipped to the format from Country. The station sounds much live WDUV...and its wonderful..they have a website...guess its new...the listen live is not up yet www.carolina921.com. Whenever I'm down in Tampa...which is a great market...I always listen to the Dove.

IMHO, While "The Dove" would tend to skew mostly women per jmtillery above, I'm certain it has a wide variety of listeners from 25-55, which is what advertisers seek. Besides, I would believe that a number keep 105.5 tuned in to make their drive home relaxing with music they are familiar with with no content that they would possibly be offended with.

Based on an average of April, May and June PPMs, WDUV is 12th in 25-54. It is 14th in 25-49 and 23th in 35-44. In 35-64 it is 4th, and 1st in over-55 and over 65.

It has defintely improved its under-55 performance of recent, but is still quite low... it was around 14th in billings last year for the market.

So......does ''around 14th'' in billings deserve the 105.5 signal ? It's clearly not popular on this board for this to be said .........the DOVE format needs to be moved to the 97.1 signal..... it only makes sense to give another Cox station the ''big signal''........I'm assuming all the others are billing better than ''around 14th''

and as mentioned in a previous post.......the 97.1 signal would still cover the larger portion of the 55 plus crowd with a city grade signal.......west Pasco and Pinellas

shuffle the deck

Ianswered it then and the answer is still the same; yes, the area's loaded with old people. Period.

So what you're saying is that the 25-54 demographic makes up a tiny, infinitesimal percentage of the overall Tampa market? Like maybe 10 percent, or 20 percent at most. Is that right?

WDUV moved to 97.1? That is as disgusting as a walker with flames and pinstripes
