WDVE sports

What other sports teams does WDVE have the rights to? I heard the other day they're doing WVU and the BB Brawl. Truth or rumor?

So far as I know, DVE only has rights to the Steeler games. Clear Channel, who own's DVE, also has rights to the Pens, Pirates, WVU (on 970 am) and maybe a few minor league teams.

Guess they'd be broadcsting the WVU feed.

I guess this is a competitive move vs. The Fan. 970 AM's contract with the Mountaineer Network must allow them to switch the broadcast to one of the other Clear Channel outlets, in this case 'DVE.

Hmmm... I'd say things are heating up a bit on the sports front.

I guess that would depend on whether the Panther Radio Network (or whatever official designation it has) has an exclusivity clause built into its contract. If they do, the WVU broadcasts of games involving the Panthers would be forbidden by any Pittsburgh station, either 970 or WDVE. I don't recall in the past of any station that carried the WVU broadcasts having the right to air games involving Pitt, so I would question whether DVE could do that now.

As WBGG has the rights to carry the Mountaineer Sports Network, I think that would include the rights to the West Virginia-Pitt game. If its Clear Channel sibling WDVE can pick up games WBGG is broadcasting, that would be an opening for FM 102.5 to carry the Backyard Brawl. However, while everyone knows 'DVE is the Steeler flagship, it would seem unusual for that station to break format even for a college game that now is the most significant one of the year in this market ... particularly since Penn State-Pitt may not happen again in our lifetimes, unless something puts those teams together in a post-season bowl.

According to the NCAA website regarding radio broadcasts, the only time an exclusivity clause can be broken or voided in a market is if both teams playing are from the same city, such as the Pitt-Duquense basketball game for instance, so while WVU has a radio affiliate in Pittsburgh, unless the Pitt radio deal does not include an exclusivity clause then the WVU broadcast shouldn't be able to air here.

It doesn't make sense ratings-wise for DVE to do that. Their regular programming would have more listeners than the game, especially the WVU feed of the game.

Most likely they want to steal some sponsors, who they can maybe keep on as clients once 970 picks up ESPN.

Neither the WDVE nor the WBGG websites mention anything about this. In fact, the WBGG site has nothing about the 'Eers except for the press release from last summer announcing the affiliation.

I heard it on good authority that DVE is airing the backyard brawl. The first time I heard it, I wasn't so sure. But, since I posted yesterday, I do believe it is happening.

Perhaps someone affliated with CBS/the Fan should check their contract to see about the exclusivity clause.

uh oh....sounds like the WKRP Carp and the WPIG Pig are going to be going at
it again for Round 2...

A little late for this discussion, but The Daily News in McKeesport did have a story on WDVE's carriage and other weekend sports on the air in Thursday's edition. The story is not on line. WDVE did indeed have the game from MSN and used it among other things to promo its being the Steeler station. Then again, with all the mistakes Pitt made, one wonders how many listeners or viewers stuck around for the end of that game?

Thanks for the update, I almost never listen to WDVE, so even if they were running promos for the broadcast I would never have heard them, which is why I went looking online to see if they were carrying the game but prior to kickoff I wasn't able to find anything.

Passed a DVE remote van coming out of the parking lot at 200 Fleet Street the other
day, and it had a WV helmet logo painted on it. I am guessing that means the move of
Mountaineer football to 102.5 is permanent?

Speaking of sports promos....anyone catch that strange one on 1250 telling you to tune
to KQV for Penn State sports? I'm sure that those two Mt. Washington bars who are 1250's
last remaining paid sponsors are lovin' THAT!

That's a good way to blow off about 9 rating points on a Saturday.

That depends. Are you sure it was painted and not just an EZ-peel-off decal? ::)
