Columbus lost a champion in Stefanie Spielman, who lost her long battle with breast cancer earlier tonight. :'(

Condolences go out to the family of 97.1 The Fan's Chris Spielman, who gave up his pro football career to be beside Stafanie in her fight.

It was a year ago this month that Columbus lost another fighter to breast cancer, WBNS 10 TV News Anchor Heather Pick.

May that day come when breast cancer never again means a death sentence.

Very sad.

Long-term survival rates are good for breast cancer, but will not be good enough until the rate is 100% for all stages. Stefanie Spielman did so much to contribute toward attainment of that goal, including building awareness of the need for screening, and she will be fondly remembered for those contributions.

Thanks for the notes guys. I know Chris appreciates your thoughts and prayers.

Not to take away from the love, time and support Chris has spent and given to Stephanie over the years with her struggle, but I thought Chris gave up his pro career due to a neck injury or situation that could have had grave consequences if he didn't quit playing.

Ms. Speilman gave hope and support to so many who have had breast cancer touch their lives. She was a true community blessing and asset.

And yes, condolances to the family.

Further follow up on this. Speilman sat out one year to assist his wife and children when Stephanie had the first bout with breast cancer. Her subsequently returned to pro ball to play for the Browns.

I remember listening to the evening news on the old progressive talk WVKO-AM when newscaster Sean Gilbow broke the news on WBNS 10 TV News Anchor Heather Pick
passing away. So, I remember where and what I was doing when Sean broke the news of her death on WVKO-AM.

For the record, the news outlet that broke the news...appropriately enough...was 10 TV, which notified me via Facebook about Stefanie's passing.

I am putting together a video tribute to both Stefanie and Heather which will be posted here tomorrow:

As one who lost his mom to that disease, I heartily second your motion, Sean.
