We are working on a CBS-FM demonstration

It MIGHT happen this Thursday, but it's all talk going on right now. The NYRMB would have more information about this. I will DEFINITELY post the time and date this will happen. And when it does happen and you're disgusted that Infinity did this flip, definitely show up :)

Infinity's mean move

good for you Tony.
I'm not an oldies fan butI am dumb founded by Infinity's move. Not only does it seem unintelligent, I can't believe they NIXED the legendary CBS-FM for "this" JACK format. It's basically a glorified AC.
______________

I don't want to argue over your word choice, Jeffrey, but even "glorified AC" is giving this format too much credit in my opinion. It's just another spin, another angle, another method of packaging. In other words, a gimmick. (I think we're in fundamental agreement.)

I may be proven wrong if this format shows more staying power than I suspect it will -- I'll admit that it's remarkable how this format has spread so far so quickly. I just can't help but see the Jack phenomenon as symptomatic of an industry ever more concerned with the bottom line and ever less with programming quality. For anyone who feels like responding to this with a statement along the lines of "that's just the way the industry is, deal with it, get a clue," etc., you're wasting your breath/keystrokes with me.

Re: Infinity's mean move

I think people are going to be surprised at the sucess of Jack. A lot of people I know in Southern California have been listening to it and have it as one of their presets in their car.

Re: Infinity's mean move

Here in Austin, Bob-FM is number one in the ratings. I hear it in more retail businesses than any other station. From what I have seen elsewhere, it looks like a winner.

Wished I could make it in from Oklahoma to take part..

Having worked in the radio business for the last 10 + years...I am just as upset by Infinity's sorry-ass move as you all here on the board are.

And just what do you expect to accomplish?
Infinity doesn't care about your demonstration.
______________

Re: Infinity's mean move

Difference being that Southern California is a completely different market than NYC. JACK is basically a HOT AC. not something that NYC. was clamoring for.
In addition this JACK thing is NOT really "that" diverse.
If you put on WPLJ or JACK I'm not sure I could tell the difference accept for JACK being jockless.
My take, wasted airspace.

New York is not Austin. The musical tastes are different, as is the level of competition. And, smaller markets are quicker to embrace something new - and quicker to abandon it as well.

Jack smells like a fad format to me. Here's how it will go - in the first 6 to 12 months, it will get good numbers thanks to sampling. After 12 months, the public will start to grow bored with it and the numbers will sag. By 18 months, Jack stations will start flipping to other "formats of the year"...big markets first.

Smaller markets may hold onto Jack for 2-4 years. But, that won't happen in the large markets. Basically, the format will have to evolve to survive - which will be difficult for THIS format to do. And, evolution has not happened in Canada...where the format is established and has had some time. And, where it has already plateaued.

Jack was a huge hit in Toronto when it premiered. Now, it gets about a 3 in the 12+ ratings. In a market with fewer players than New York. Doesnt bode well for US markets - which are even less rock oriented than their neighbors to the north.

It doesn't matter how beautiful of a dress you put on a pig; it's still just a pig. Or a Jack.

JACK in New York is HOT AC, non rhythmic based.

And that's the point right there...it's NOT about Infinity.

When I ran the Metro New York Dance Radio Coalition, our purpose was to get a broadcaster to give the dance music format another chance after Hot 97 dropped it in favor of hip-hop. The campaign was NOT anti-Hot 97 NOR anti-Emmis. And that's what the oldies fan have to realize when they form together. Sure, they can be MAD at Infinity, they can be MAD about what happened to WCBS, but their premise should focus on getting another station to do the oldies format...pro-Oldies. And hey, I wouldn't rule Infinity out....After Stern on K-Rock, who knows?

Point is, those who plan on organizing such an event should keep the focus on pro-Oldies (being in front of WCBS studios is more symbolic of what was lost). After the rally is said and done....LAY OFF INFINITY. Leave "Jack" alone. Move on to finding solutions and making noise for an oldies station to return.

Probably not. But it's worth the shot to try.
