In an effort to reach people with the true message of Christmas, New Life 91.9 will begin playing Christmas music every weekend from Halloween until Thanksgiving. The station will play all Christmas music after Thanksgiving.

I enjoy Christmas music...but...I CAN wait.

Whatever happened to starting out with 1 or 2 Christmas songs per hour after Thanksgiving?

We start Christmas at Thanksgiving and ease into it, but we are small market and just get kicked around on the boards, cause most people think we don't know what we are doing.

Ah the voice of reason! Small markets are the place to be now days! This jumping into Christmas so early just seems wrong, a merchandising ploy to get people shopping. Conversely I used to hate it when all Christmas music stopped at 6pm Christmas day. Once again I think you can ease out of it.

As far as holiday music goes I enjoy the more serious carols. Having said that I must admit it's fun to hear Johnny Mathis, Andy Williams, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra on the radio again. It's also a little depressing for me because these artists are either very old or no longer with us. Most of the baby boomer artists can't seem to come up with good lasting Christmas songs in my opinion. There area a few exceptions I will admit. Thankfully the programmers realize this and include the standards artists who are not heard on the air any other time of year.

No matter what you do I hope you have a great Christmas this year and remember to pause and reflect on what it's all about.

Surprised nobody has mentioned here that K104 and Lite are both all-Christmas. I read K is previewing but is Lite full-time?
I didn't think to come here until now but I did hear Christmas music on both stations. I haven't tried them today, but I think K-104.7 is just previewing.

On one station I heard David Bowie and Bing Crosby's duet "Little Drummer Boy". Crosby was pushed way back into the background. I don't know whether that's how they did it. This was truly innovative, because it happened years before Rod Stewart started recording old songs.

I heard a contemporary vocal performance of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" which still sounded good because it had traditional instrumentals.

I also heard "O Holy Night" by someone who sounded like Josh Groban.

On the other hand, I refuse to voluntarily listen to any of this contemporary garbage, even though the songs might be the familiar ones. As far as I'm concerned, the songs have to have been recorded in 1960 or sound like they were. "Jingle Bell Rock" to me is cutting edge and borderline.

It was an annual ritual at WMNC to find where one of our employees had hidden her Christmas music every year.

In a throwback to times past we had a lady who worked in the office and also had an hour long "Woman's" program from 9 - 10 am weekdays. Every year several of us had to search her office and some other favorite hiding places she had to confiscate hidden Christmas records, otherwise she would have had some on the air the day after Halloween, and every day afterwards.

Every year the hiding places got a bit tougher and we had to search more to keep the Christmas off the air until after Thanksgiving.

It was really hard to hide the music and keep it off the air, too when advertisers and salespeople were wanting it as background music on commercials.

Those were the days of fun in radio, alas they are no more even in the small towns.

I've always said hold off on the more religous type tunes until Xmas Eve & Day (Little ZTown Of Bethlehen, Oh Holy Night, etc. CHR stations should stick with CHR atrist's renditions also. Today I heard Jose Feliciano back to back with Jason Derulo & about flipped my car. I also say throw in more novelty Xmas tunes & NOT Elmo & Patsy...EVER AGAIN...and keep country Xmas tunes on country stations (unless it's crossover or Alabama's Xmas In Dixie")...at least until Dec. 24th thru 11:59pm Dec. 25th.

I sometimes see what's on K-104.7 and if it's good, I might stick with the station until a commercial break or something bad. They must be better than Lite 102.9 because sometimes i can stay with them for 5 songs.

You would not believe how many novelty Christmas tunes there really are out there. There are enough that for several years, XM Radio offered a holiday Channel of nothing but Novelty Christmas tunes all day long, with not that much repeitition. They called it appropriately: "Special XMas"
