We dedicate this Rockin' New Year's Eve to Mr. Dick Clark.

New Year's has been an institution to the true TV Legend himself. Times Square will never be the same again. The torch was passed to Dick Clark from Guy Lombardo, and now it is passed on over to Ryan Seacrest-with Fergie & Jenny McCarthy helping him. Fergie has been the co-host of New Tear's Rockin' for the 7 years, and she has done a fine job. Also, there's Anderson & Kathie Griffin on CNN, and Carson on NBC. Wide choices, but ABC has done it for nearly 4 decades.

Yeah but even Ryan himself takes the proverbial back seat on New Years Eve

Having said that, I can see things maybe 10 years from now changing whereas Dick's name isn't even mentioned because they would be appealing to an audience who doesn't even know who Dick Clark is (Let alone the legacy he left behind). We have prepare ourselves for that eventuality because it will happen. It's only a matter of when - Not if

Cheers & 73 :D

It seems like everything is Ryan Seacrest these days. :(

...and in the 70's through the 90's everything was Dick Clark. Seriously, if his Dick Clark productions wasn't producing a show,he was hosting it. Game show. Check. Bloopers. Double check. Music presentation or awards show. Yep. At least three radio shows on the RKO radio networks of which Rock, Roll and Remember was huge for our AC station.

Someone has to take the baton. At least Seacrest comes across as sincere in his respect and admiration for Clark, and if he wasn't true to it in this age of no secrets on the Internet, we'd have found out by now. It's pretty impossible for Ryan or anyone to break ground in music as Clark did in Philly in the 50's with American Bandstand, but Seacrest should be the guy that takes that baton.

For television, there was very few shows that Dick Clark hosted that he didn't own himself -- most notably the $10,000 Pyramid (and its successors) for Bob Stewart.

On radio, my earliest Dick Clark memory on the radio was when he hosted his "National Music Survey" countdown show for Mutual from 1981 to 1985; after he left Mutual for United Stations (which he had a stake in) to do the former RKO countdown "Countdown America", the Mutual "Survey" turned real vanilla, with man-woman co-hosts by 1988.

He really does respect Clark, as he should. And for the first time, I felt he was a worthy successor. Carson Daly is dignified too and actually boring.

I mostly saw commercials as I just attempted to avoid what passes for music these days. Before midnight all I got that I considered good music was a Ciroc commercial. I liked Justin Bieber's performance until he started singing. Why not just have the guitar player? After midnight, of course, it sounded like Guy Lombardo, not Kenny G or any other cheap imitation. And the signal to go bed was a tradition I keep forgetting about: Sinatra's "New York, New York". As much as I like it, I need to go to bed. And I had a hard time going to sleep. I felt lousy when I woke up.

The two-hour special was wonderful, except for all the performances of new music. Toward the end, I was wishing there could be more. The best music was by Johnny Cash and Neil Diamond. And the Abba girls and The Bangles were so pretty.

Even when he was 13, Clark knew Michael Jackson was some kind of nut. He had a snake??? We all knew he kept weird pets but even then ???

One of the main highlights from last night was a live performance by Train as they covered John Lennon's "Imagine"-a song that was heard right before the ball was dropped to signal the year 2013.

Did anyone notice CBS did nothing special to celebrate NYE? I guess their fresh NYE programming ideas died with Guy Lombardo.

You'd think CBS would have Letterman doing a new show, preferably live, since he is right in New York City.

Some additional details about the special that aired earlier.

I didn't know Dick didn't kiss his wife at midnight for years. That's been going on so long I thought he had always done it.

And I knew there was more good music. They showed Dick dancing on Arthur Murray's show.

John Travolta's song was really bad.

I think they tried that for a couple years after he jumped to CBS, but it obviously didn't last very long.

Conan also had a probably pre-taped NYE show, so did Leno

I watched the ball drop on Fox News. I alternated between FNC and UNIV (both have hot babes) during the subsequent celebration, then went to bed because I had to get up for work at 7:30a yesterday.

Jenny MacArthy was all over the place with everyone. I wondered how much she had to drink before going on air. Also, the Navy guy tried to sneak another kiss, but she did not give it up.

Watched Times Square at 9:00p on CNN with Anderson and Kathy. Of course, NO NUDITY! I'll miss Dick Clark. Then I watched New Year's at the Needle like I do every year, at 11:35 on KING 5.
