We have a New Number #1 Station in Columbus?!?

And it's our favorite lighting rod, WLZT 93.3FM !

What it looks like is you played Christmas Music you got a nice 1.0 -1.5 bump, unless you are WLZT then you TRIPLE YOUR REGULAR RATINGS!

They rode that Holiday Train to Number #1 with 9.3 and WSNY's holiday bump wasn't that big after all with 7.8 and WCVO got a nice 5.1 rating on holiday

It looks likes WLZT's #1 came at the cost of WNCI with a 7.6.

Anything else you guys are noticing?

WHKC 91.5 saw a very small bump in cume.. I wonder if that was due to WCVO going Christmas and folks who didn't want "Christmas24/7" tuned elsewhere.

Where was Ted Williams when they needed him? I think that story broke just about the time the book ended.

While NCI may have borne much of the brunt of sibling LZT, as I mentioned in the other thread I think the pain was pretty much spread around except for rock stations. In fact, another CC sibling -- WCOL -- dropped a full point like NCI (and by more than NCI if you look at it on a percentage-drop basis). Also note that COL's absolute decline in cume approached twice NCI's cume decline.

I know a lot of the focus is on FM stations, but this has got to be one of the lowest books for WTVN AM in a while. CC hasn't been big on doing the AM/FM thing, but I've got to wonder if it isn't time?

I think he was breaking into cars at the Home Depot. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame the guy. Smoking crack is an expensive habit.

And to add Gen X Columbus is slipping fast. 2.3 this go around with the trend dropping in the last 3 books. CC has been moving it Talk radio staions to FM see Syracuse. WTVN-FM may be coming to 106.7 if Gen X Radio don't turn it around soon, But a good question to ask is How do CC view WTVN? Do they view them as a force in Columbus radio or just another AM Talk / News station?

Come on, Dispatch. You know what to do here, Newsradio 1460 WBNS. You got the Dispatch and 10TV Newsrooms at your disposal. Those two doing some more work isn't too much to ask these days.

As far as Gen-X (or just about any other station that's slipping), you can't draw any solid conclusions based on a holiday book.  Their target is largely Moms who may have had a high propensity to turn to Christmas music.  Same goes if they were getting a lot of office listening.  It's clear that female-leaning stations lost more to Santa than male (which could explain why rock stations were relatively unscathed -- although I thought the Brew's rock skewed female, and they still seem to have done well).  In any event, the people with the detailed data are probably doing less guessing than we are.  But one thing we can see by looking at cume drop vs. share drop is that for the most part listeners were keeping a button for Gen-X, while just spending less time there (presumably listening to Christmas music).

On the flip-side, it's always possible that much of Gen-X's drop was unrelated to Santa, in which case I hope it's temporary -- especially with the recent improvements at Gen-X.  Unfortunately that station is always going to be more vulnerable and less resilient as long as it's stuck on the so-so signal at 106.7.  In fact,  I doubt that any music format (including the Gen-X format) could ever score much higher 12+ at 106.7 than the "initial buzz" 4.0 Gen-X pulled in November.

GenX is definitely slipping as far as I'm concerned. I don't get their music selection anymore. They started off GenX, now they're GenX and sometimes Y. There's so many good songs that we never hear on the radio anymore yet they continue to play the same crap you could hear on a number of other stations in the capital city.

Is it so hard to program a station successfully in this damn market?

With 93.3 and Sunny 95 getting ratings that high you better hope they don't kick off the holiday music in October. As for genx Rick dees retro countdown shows on Saturday mornings gives you and opportunity to hear songs you haven't heard in a while.

Would make sense if we were in an ideal economy with 4% unemployment and zero poverty.

But Dispatch isn't going to spend the money on an expensive format on a signal that's compromised that night (especially when there is NO turnkey satellite all-news format in operation - TRN's piecemeal attempt doesn't count).

Alas, simulcasting ONN's TV audio 24/7 is far and away more likely for 1460, if Dispatch ever had the thought about placing all-news on there. And they would make no promotional mentions, no advertisments, no 10TV or ONN promos. (Translation - that station would have ZERO listeners.)

1460 is going to be simulcasting The Fan for a very long time.

Do tell ...

Schmave hears WBNS-AM 1460 may be changing formats.

Personally, it makes more sense to me for them to simulcast ONN's TV audio 24/7 and have local news break-ins.

It would be a cheap and simple way to do it. But I don't expect Dispatch to spend much money - if at all - on a new format. 1460 barely cut the mustard with sports, especially with the poor night signal.

They'd might as well call it ESPN 1460 and be done with it. They esentally clear all the aESPN Radio stuff the FM doesn't want/won't carry
