We Lose another Legend: Buzz Barr

Instrumental in the formative days of rock radio in Seattle, and still active in his native Aberdeen. I remember most of all the impact he had in getting KING radio established as a Top-40 at the beginning of the 1970's.

If there is an upside to losing anyone ... in this case it's knowing that Jim Martin wasn't alone very long. He and Buzz were essentially inseparable and now they can pick up where they left off: Outdoing each other's stories.

farewell.

True story- when I say Buzz was my 2nd Father... it's no exaggeration. Buzz was old school all the way. Although we hadn't seen one another for 13 months we stayed in touch. Yes, Buzz was the "master" of the great Radio story- heck, he's the only one I know who gave Mick Jagger a piggyback ride. In 77 when he was the GM at Hoquiam's KGHO I was a 17 year old kid from Raymond coming into the station asking him how to get into Radio. He sat me down in their prod studio and showed me how to run the Ampex R2R and how to cue up a record and how to use a cart machine and told me I could come in anytime the studio wasn't being used to "practice" my on air work.

When I saw him over a year ago, he gave me all of his reel to reel airchecks. I'm going to get crackin' on putting together some audio. From KAPA in Raymond to KBKW in Aberdeen to KITI in Centralia to KOL, KJR and KING he ruled the airwaves as a great communicator. Mr. ONE ON ONE all the way.

Rest well, my friend...

RR

He MADE the sound at KING-AM. His pipes were incredible. Kind of a Don O' Neil type of projection. Few around now days with that kind of vocal noise. Mostly nasaly sounding kids who's voices are still reaching maturity..
