I just heard on an oldies station on line from the high desert a song I have not heard since March 1964 when it made number 39 on the Billboard charts. The tune was by a British Girl Group called the Carefrees, the song was, We love you Beatles. The funny thing is, I heard this song on WABC and WAMS for a short time when it came out, but never on WIBG, did WIBG ever play it? that is the question. Maybe this was not the place to ask this question, I don't now if anyone on here is that old to remember the good times in the mid 60's with AM radio.
 
I don't have an answer for you, because the only version of this song I've ever heard was sung by fans. I wasn't aware it was ever recorded. As you probably know, the song was based on "We Love You Conrad" from the movie "Bye Bye Birdie." The movie was very popular at the time, about a teen idol. Fans took the song and changed the lyrics. I don't know if The Carefrees got the idea from the fans, who sang it here as early as 1964, or if they were singing it in England. Very curious.

I presume you mean that a group of fans would sing it, when the Beatles were near. I heard, what Hangman must have been talking about, on the radio, which had to be KISN Portland, the other side of the country, so it must have been widespread.
 
Correct, its a take from "We Love You Conrad" from "Bye Bye Birdie", living in NYC in the sixties, both WABC and WMCA would play the whole song right before they played a Beatles record. I am surprised it never showed up on most oldies station playlists, in the early 70's, although WCBS-FM would give it a spin every so often. Don't know if WIBG played it, you could go on the WiBG playlist site and check the chart for March 1964 and see if it charted. this band featuring Lynn Cornell, Barbara Kay and Betty Prescott. Lynn was married to Andy White, ironically Ringo's stand-in on the Love Me Do sessions! Glad you brought this thread up, great memory jar :)
 
That's about as "novelty" a song, as you can get. I vaguely remember hearing it, since it was brought to my attention. If I never hear it again, it won't make any difference to me and that is probably why no one plays it anymore.
 
I'm familiar with the song because Crusin' 92.1 WVLT uses it every day for an intro to the fab four at 4, when they play four records by the Beatles in a row at 4 PM. It didn't know it was a real song! I always thought it was fans singing that they recorded to use for the segment.

Having been a regular listener to WABC, WMCA, AND WIBG, I remember that song and I am pretty sure WIBG never played it.
 
Off topic I guess but 90 miles down the turnpike it is, yet Philly has never been the top 40 CHR market that New York has always been. WIBG and a few others had their moments for sure, but never to the success of wins, wmca, wabc, wxlo, wplj, whtz had in NYC. I know that in the 80s hot hits wcau never got in the top 5 18-34, while plj and z100 were sometimes #1 and #2 18-34 18-49 and 25-54. Today z100 is many times #1 or 2 in those demos and yet again q102 is not even top 5 18-34.

So for the old school guys, in the 70s and 60s what was the most successful top 40 and when/how long did they sustain it.
