I have left my years in radio far behind in my rear-view mirror (and I thank the Lord everyday for that). But even I have a heart beating somewhere beneath layers of granite. What Clear Channel is doing to its employees is so appalling, so despicable and so cowardly that something must be done.

Occupy Clear Channel.

Storm their freaking gates on 68. Bring banners with slogans stating what blood-sucking avaricious pigs those bastards really are. Refuse to leave. Make them bring out the attack dogs and fire hoses. Then videotape the whole thing.

If that fails, then it's pitchforks and torches, tar and feathers, guns and grenades.

These f******s have it coming to them. If blood must be spilled, let it be theirs. Clear Channel is the stuff to fill graves.

BURN IT DOWN TO THE GROUND, SPIT ON THE CADAVERS, AND SALT THE EARTH SO NOTHING CAN GROW AGAIN.

I am absolutely serious. These sons of bitches need to pay.

I love your enthusiasm

It speaks to what is going on in this country across the board. Clear Channel is one of many who are doing this exact same thing.

It's the epidemic of greed that has been going on in America for quite some time but at as time goes on and technology gets better it gives these mega corporations more justification for doing what they're doing.

I'm really in awe of greed. Companies will do whatever they can, dismantle businesses working model in the name of short term profits and lining the pockets of the 5 guys at the top at the peril of entire industries. And they are protected by government. Think about how Clear Channel is $22 Billion in Debt and they recently just purchased Metro Networks? How the hell can a company that's $22 Billion in Debt with a cash flow of $4 Billion be allowed to buy another company? This tangled mess of government compliance, greed, and Crazy Uncle Like spending by corporations is sickening.

Deregulate, Decimate, and Count the $$$$

That's the model of American business today

Why Occupy Anything? The Big Group Owners took their stations, optimized them and raked in the money without putting anything back. Steve Jobs saw it and gave the world the iPod. Next year, car manufacturers will have Internet Radios as an option. The public spoke and broadcasting as most of us remember died under the control of the Big Group Owners and their FCC puppets.

I have no idea if local media will ever return in a form that can be profitable.

Big Doug and Stafferman - Not to get too political here, but it really scares me that we continue to allow our politicians to pander to these big corporations and let them operate unregulated and untaxed to feed their corporate greed. They tell us that deregulation and lower taxes will allow these big companies to hire more people. Oh really? . . . ask all those folks just let go at Clear Channel! How's this deregulation thing workin' out for ya? All the outsourcing of jobs to other countries for cheaper labor, the cooking of books, on and on. The big corporations and their lobbyists are ruining this country. I certainly don't want to see the government running things, but there needs to be some reining in done.

atticus...here's the deal as i see it:
radio/newspapers/etc. are finished as far as "pay" for play.
newspapers will be free as pamphlets. NObody will actually *pay* for one.
same for broadcast radio. yeah, it's FREE now. radio will PAY to listen,
or it will be subsidized like WUNC. right now, radio is paid by those who wish
to broadcast, but in the future, radio pays those who want to listen.

All valid points and never say Not to get too political. This country is an absolute mess and it's always a valid conversation. I heard Rick Perry talking about how lenders have too many straps put on them and banks need more freedom. It's gotten to the point where this country is comical. Banks need more freedom? It's a joke. And I'm a pretty conservative guy but c'mon....deregulation can be helpful but there's a difference be deregulation and just letting companies run wild, then after they F up WE BAIL THEM OUT

Where's our bailout? Where's all the Clear Channel layoffs bailout? Will they get to buy up radio stations then get refinanced by some mothership corporation when they can't pay the til?

The Occupy stuff is really just a joke, there's a difference between hanging out in a park and actually protesting what is going on. The difference between our generation and what happened 50 years ago is this country is a police state. The Jimmy Hoffa's of the world would protest and when the cops would show up, they would fist fight the cops.

If people did that now there would be rubber bullets filled with mase, helicopters, tear gas, etc etc etc and things would get shut down in a heartbeat. I still think things haven't gotten bad enough yet. We're clearly all not doing well but until services start shutting down and you can't get your groceries or gas to fill your car, then I thing the Americans boiling point will burst.

I'm certain it's going to get A LOT worse. Negativity never helped anything, but let's just be realistic. We can't pay unemployment and provide food stamps forever. At some point, people are going to get REAL hungry and their families will be hungry. I'm afraid Miss Gucci bag will be walking down the street and someone's going to kill her. I can't believe how the top 1% is thriving! Mercedes sales are way up and high-end clothing is doing really well. Makes me feel a little nauseous to see some of the conspicuous spending when we have so many hurting in this country. The Occupy people really are a disjointed bunch, but it shows that people are mad and they're trying to show it. They just don't really have strong leadership so they're floundering, but still, the anger is there. And people have guns. Angry people and guns are not a good mix. I think you're right, as things get worse and we have shortages, a lot of people are going to wake up from their comas.

What truly is amazing is how there truly is little to no middle class...just like there will be no "middle class" independent radio folks soon.

The so-called "1%" have bought and paid for the legislatures around our nation, the police, and the media. This whole Rush Limbaugh spew he says about "the liberal-controlled media" is a load of bullcrap. Sorry, not playing the left vs. right game. Look at who owns what in the world of TV/radio and then you'll understand.

And you can guarantee these so-called "protests" will not do much (even change the electoral sway). Our buddies who have bought and paid for much of the local, state, and federal government will use the "justice" system to either evict or crush the protest with brutal police tactics.

Anyway, kids...get ready for some fun. Our mass media has become centralized (or consolidated, to use the business term), the press has largely become a soap-box for the super-rich, far-right folks, and people are living in poverty in far greater numbers since before WWII. The insanity is only gonna get worse too...so get a gun and plenty of liquor, and wait it out because we will be in several decades of pain!

Wouldn't you think someone would do local radio on the Internet? And market it? The day is upon us where the Internet is a portable as any radio used to be (cars, etc.). Imagine the savings - no transmitter buildings, no towers, just a high speed Internet connection and a heavy duty server. Concentrate on local, local, local. Target advertisers who also target local! Could work. Could take some time to make a lot of money, but it can work!

X-Talker:

I'm giving the local Internet radio idea a try. Started it about a year ago. It still has a long way to go, though. I wrote about it earlier today on the blog which you can read here:

Big D is targeting Tallahassee. FL/North Florida/South Georgia. It's not too far from "break-even" financially.

Touche Alan McCall nice job.

I think internet radio has great opportunity, podcasts are really starting to take off. Several well known comics have well listened to and great radio/interview styled podcasts.
