WE NEED P/T BOARD OPS

I'm with the Information Radio Network, based here in Memphis. In January we absorbed the USA Radio Network, now we have four separate satellite signals that must be monitored 24/7 and we need folks to help out. Great family-owned, NON-CORPORATE place to be, tremendous brand-new facility. Part-time shifts, you must have a fairly flexible schedule. Basic knowledge of radio automation systems a must. Dependability and an earnest desire to work a not-that-exciting position to make some extra money essential.

Contact my boss, Chuck Bates. His email is [email protected]

I'm not sure I'd expect anyone with "earnest desire" to want to work such a "not-that-exciting position," but then again, there are probably a few eager beavers out there who don't want to let a 4 year degree in broadcast communication go to waste.

Sorry, I'm having one of those dream-sequence flashbacks (like on Gilligan's Island, where the professor dreams he is not on the island, but living in a medieval castle, harboring devious intentions about Mary Ann) and all the horrors of entry level radio just came flooding back. I'll be ok when the trembles subside.

If anyone here actually takes one of these slots ("opportunities" for the under 25 crowd), please come back as time permits and let us know how it's going running the feeds for "Steel on Steel," or "Doers of the World," as well as the intriguing, "Torah Talk."

In the meantime, I'll stick with my knitting and reminiscing.

Eggman,

PM me about this... I am making an immidiate career move - I would like a few options on locations.

The Beave

Several issues here:

First, can we please rid ourselves of the angst about "corporate" radio? How many times on this board have we cooed like schoolgirls about the glory days of radio?

But those stations we hold in such high regard were not exactly mom-and-pop operations. RKO General, Plough and Scripps Howard were big CORPORATIONS.

In the silly post at the top of this discussion, we are led to believe that working for IRN will not be corporate.

But IRN is owned by First American Monetary Consultants, a CORPORATION with CORPORATE headquarters in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Also please be aware that the IRN and its parent FAMC, Inc. are a bunch of end-of-the-world kooks.

Their Huckster-In-Chief, Dr. Larry Bates, has for many years been predicting the "imminent financial collapse" of the United States. His solution? Invest all your money in gold, silver, platinum and foreign currencies. Since 1980, gold has increased in value about 40%, about 1.4% a year. In the same period, the Dow Jones average has increased 1400%.

So if you spend most of your time in the basement, sitting in the dark in your underwear listening to shortwave and keeping a lookout for the black helicopters, this may be the radio gig you've dreamed about.

But if you are a normal, well-adjusted broadcaster, go seek employment with one of those evil corporate groups.

End-of-the-world kooks they may be, but considering their location, at least they'll know the correct time when Ragnarok arrives.

IRN is definitely an example of what is wrong with Dollar a Holler "Christian" radio. Their primary station in Memphis is WMQM so that should tell you something. :p

"RAGNAROK"- HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Only THIS board could tie together Christian/Corporate Radio and the Norse "End of The World Doom!"

(or were you just refering to the game?)

Eithewr way...that shiz-nit cracked me up!

;D

As much as people like to bash the "sterile corporate lion," Grape is absolutely correct. The corporate end may be more structured and seem a bit stifling, but on the other hand, working for eccentrics who who don't have to answer to anyone, and change direction with the wind, is a recipe for misery. The most outrageous experiences recounted on this board are almost always related to working for eccentric independent station owners.

If you've ever played "Whack A Mole" at a carnival, then you already know what it is like to work at an independent. (You being the mole.)

Eggman, I can't help but think you might do better (and get more positive responses) if you follow this link and repost your above message there:

Hmmmm....

With the times I met Chuck Bates, he was a pretty nice guy.

In the relatively small time I've been in radio here, I've dealt with "non-corporate" politics and corporate politics. I've found that I can handle the corporate politics better because I don't have to face the people who instigate the politics several times a day.

I pretty much agree with Grape about everything else. Except that, while they are heavy-handed with the potential financial shifting, I can't sit here and say that I don't wish I had invested in precious metals years ago to be able to afford gas.

It's pretty sad that I can't offer people a few extra bucks without launching a diatribe about my employers (whom I doubt any of you have actually met in person) filled with snide remarks and attacks about a company you know very little about.

Excuse me for trying to help folks. We've actually hired a few people as a result of this post, the rest of you, best of luck.

Does offering people "a few extra bucks" mean "over what they'd get paid if they were not working at all" or "above and beyond what someone could earn at McDonald's?" And does your employer offer anything to offset the free McFlurrys people would have to give up?

It is good to hear that you've someone managed (against all rational odds) to hire "a few people" from this post. There isn't anyone here who wouldn't support something that could potentially reduce occupancy at the city's homeless shelters.

If you're one of the "few" hirees, remember, you are still welcome to come back here and cry and lament if you ever get the urge. We can also help with reintroduction to society through classes and seminars (check the schedule postings).

Hired "a few" people?

Does anyone here actually believe that?

Care to drop any names on your multiple hires, eggman?

Gotta run for now -- my Dr. Larry End Of The World kit just arrived.

IRN is neo-con religious fanatics.

Yeah those family owned businesses. Like the Flinns.

I used to work for them too!

I notice you didn't take the suggestion I made. I just checked the jobs board on this site, and you haven't posted your opening(s) there yet. Post it there, and you may hire more than "a few people."

I don't know anything about the inner workings of IRN (and Chuck and Larry are probably nice guys), but I do know a little about the ownership of WMQM/WLRM, and it was them that I was criticizing.

eggman961....You should just get used to it...

It's plainly obvious that there is such a large amount of bitterness on this site toward anyone that doesn't "do" radio like it was done 20-30 years ago. All other industries are allowed to morph and change, but radio should still be on AM, should still pay air staff even when no one is listening, and should still use carts.

This does not apply to a lot of you, but some of you need to get your collective heads out of your a$$es.

He was simply offering an "opportunity" to folks that may be looking to get their foot in the door.

But I'm sure those jumping on the pile here didn't need their first opportunity.

SS,
I am still very serious about my original offer... If the Eggman would contact me I would seriously consider applying.

My note of interest probably got buried in the crap the old farts were spewing.

Just send a PM with the contact info.

Anybody who needs money this bad (and can't get hired at McDonalds) deserves our support. Keep in mind that there are government programs that offer staples such as milk and cheese to those in dire need. If it would help, we can all can put our minds together and suggest alternative jobs that might be a better choice. Let's start with, "car wash attendant." I'm sure others will chime in with their suggestions.
