We Own It, 98.7

We Own 98.7... So WNOX is moving to 98.7... after renting... we will improve the signal... we are getting some new toys

good thing they didn't make the announcement on 98.7, hardly anyone could have heard it.

I just hope it's not country. If 100.3 does go hick, Journal should just ditch the format on 93.1 and go True Oldies Channel feed with it. Perhaps even a classic hits format done right?

Or, if 100.3 doesn't go country or oldies, maybe ditch Jack FM on 95.7/106.7 on put True Oldies or a Classic Hits format on there instead.

My vote is for classic hits on any.

When 100.3 goes country, and let's face it, they hired Ed Brantley, that's what they're going to do, I think you'll see Journal go Oldies on 93.1 by then, if not sooner.

What format can take a substantial chunk out of everyone? I understand going head to head with WIVK, but in my experience country audiences are a fiercly loyal crowd. Will Pirkle be issuing his own press release?

Told ya.

Problem now is they are trying to run down 100.35? If it so sucked then why did they work so hard and spend MILLIONS to keep the LMA? Best to move on and not talk about how bad where they were is and please stop trying to say where they are going is going to be so much better.

On the positive side, I bet more than a few of us actually dialed up the HHH show for the first time in a very long time. Having Phil, HHH, Dave and Albert Hammmond (kidding) in studio was not the best idea..longer you talk about a spin the deeper your dig your grave.

Now, talk among yourselves!

PS
Not a clue what will happen with the big stick or who will lease it??

Aw, C'mon Walker. You Know Pirkle has been itching to take it back. No chance they'll go with another LMA.

[turn spin voice on] "WNOX NewsTalk 98.7. Just like 100.3 only better. Um, yeah, that's the ticket." [turn spin voice off]

They were hinting about a signal upgrade for 98.7. Is that even theoretically possible? Listeners who were calling in were talking about how they couldn't get 98.7.

It's possible, they own the next closest signal at 99.1, so I would guess that opposition to a signal boost would be small at best.

Wonder if they could move the 98.7 tower from its current location around Chestnut Ridge (Powell) to Sharp's Ridge? That would technically cover more of the population if they could keep it a C3 signal. Not sure what that would do to the signal to the north and west though. Of course, this may not even be possible.

Mike H was on WBIR at noon telling everyone the Oldies format was toast. No shock at all except for those who know it was the only format like that on their over the air radio receiver.

As for JP you all know what the smart thing to do is. FIND someone else to LMA the thing 2!

If you can't then the safe path would be to go country, wipe out all the little fellers who are country and take a nice slice out of IVK. Agencies would love to have another selection at a lower rate than IVK to buy.

Knox area advertisers: If I had a product to advertise, I'd want Hallerin Hill to sell it. With the kind of positive spin he put on a downgrade this morning, he could probably sell anything. (Take that as a compliment, HHH!)

Putting country on 100.3 really wouldn't be all that bad a thing if they would just live up to what WIVK claims and that is to play today's current music and the "all time country legends." Let's face it... when does WIVK actually play any country legends anymore? Two hours on Sunday night? When was the last time they played Merle or Conway during regular dayparts, and not just the same two songs? They claim to have the largest country library in the world but I know people with a larger country library on their ipod! How about a well balanced country format that actually mixes in a decent amount of classic oldies and alternative country/southern rock too. Oh but then again that might actually be enjoyable to listen to, and this IS radio we're talking about.

Not sure how much they can upgrade, if at all. 98.5 in Kingston is a full Class C. They have a directional null to the NE which actually has the effect of pushing MORE signal in the opposite direction, right towards Knoxville. On the other side, you have the Cookeville C2 on 98.5.

Doesn't seem to me like there's much wiggle room there.

Am I the only one here that remembers what got the Pirkle boys in this LMA mess to start with?

They had country on 100.3 and it was taking a big pile of money out of WIVK's pocket.

Now that the LMA is done, and they aren't under any obligation to anyone they're going to dust off that catalog, digitize it
and bring back "The Hitkicker" and make every single station operator very wealthy once they knock WIVK down to single digits.
