WEAC - CD Alabama's Most Successful LPTV

I recently subscribed to AT&T U-verse and much to my surprise, I WEAC-CD among the station lineup. The station first signed on the air on December 29, 1994 as W24CB, which broadcast information for students, staff and visitors of Jacksonville State University. The station changed its call letters to WJXS-CA in 2002, as an affiliate of FamilyNet. On October 9, 2012, the station changed its call sign to WEAC-CA (East Alabama Community), and again to WEAC-CD on January 8, 2013. The little station that could, 12.8 kw of power being carried on more than a dozen cable systems.

I don't know how you could call them the most successful — WVUA-CA in Tuscaloosa is carried on several cable and satellite providers as well, and like TV 24 they also have a full time news department. They also have the distinction now of being being retransmitted on WUOA-DT 6 from atop Red Mountain in Birmingham, giving that little LPTV station coverage of most of central Alabama.

I think both stations are good examples of how LPTV can serve markets neglected by larger, more powerful stations in bigger markets. Technically Tuscaloosa and Anniston may be part of the Birmingham DMA but they get little lip time on B'ham news channels.
