Weakest Stations in DFW

Not in Order
Taken in McKinney

93.3 KDBN
570 KLIF
1160 KVCE
660 KSKY [completely gone at night]
99.5 ???? The Wolf
1310 KTCK
102.1 KDGE
102.5 KMAD
770 KAAM

Does Anyone have any idea how these stations with such a poor signal stay on ???

you forgot about 87.9 the-pirate-station. I've gotten reports of hearing them in Plano, I dunno about McKinney

Plano... and Mesquite

KAAM and KLIF come in clear over here down in Brazos Valley. I can easily catch the HD signal for both of these stations.

KDBN is a for shure, they are a small local stick.

The rest, I'm too far to catch over here.

I live about 16 miles north of you on the Collin/Grayson line. The only signal I have trouble with on your list is 93.3. It is washed out by 93.1 out of Ardmore. Naturally we can't get the AM's after they power down at night. You used to be able to pick up 570 and 1190 pretty good until you crossed under State 121 at US 75 at night. I live one mile (as the crow flys) from the 1700 tower and have one radio that will not pick it up after sundown and two that will.

Are you in a steel framed building or in a hole? All of your radios or just one?

Define "weakest"...my first thought was weakest format, or weakest at what they do...like KDBN is weak at programming real classic rock, for example. ;D

One station I miss hearing is KETR in Commerce. Although I'm living on the eastern fringe, the signal is so-so at best...and their playlist isn't too bad, though real inconsistent (basically a non-com Jack.) They used to come in much clearer. I wish KMAD-Whitesboro could beam towards DFW. That's about the closest to the 1970s-80s version of Q102 (formatically, not terrestrially) as DFW listeners can get at this time, at least (having ex-Q102 programmers and jocks staffing it at ABCRN helps!) The Bone comes and goes, even in the heart of DFW. 94.5 is doing amazing better with the new tower at Ethel...the EQ could be tweaked much better, but the signal's pretty consistent no matter where I drive...a VAST improvement over the Edge of old, and leaps and bounds better than the old KZRK and KDNT and KGAF. KRNB's signal has dramatically improved in the last year or two as well.

The biggest disappointment has to be KLAK 97.5...with the move to Tom Bean, TX, I'm not picking it up any better than I used to when the xmtr was in Sherman/Denison.

You mean the FCC still hasn't opened a can o'whoopass on them yet?

Nope, and I suspect they don't care either.

As long as a person operates any hours other than 9am-5pm I guess they get away with it!

They do operate between 9 AM - 5 PM... At least they did when I last checked.

here lately from what I understand theyve been turning on at 5:01pm (give or take). They usually sign off around midnight.

The problem isn't really with your one (bad?) radio! As part of their relicensing to Richardson KKLF built a different site for nighttime. The tower is southeast of McKinney, just north of Lucas:

Interesting. Is there anythig else using that tower or just 1700 during the day? There are two turns I make going to the house and 1700 will null out 820 and 1310 for about 2 seconds. Weird.

Always thought that was a strange place to put a tower. It's kinda between two small hills and a ridge line to the north. It does have a good LOS to the south which was the origional pourpose I guess.

I'll see if I can pick something up on Monday, after 9:00 AM or so.

Here's an audio sample of the 87.9 pirate I am picking up in Mesquite, in case anyone is interested. There was a bit of static which I suspect was due to slightly weak reception. I was able to filter most of it out.

Man, that's clear enough! Ya know, I haven't brushed up on my Spanish since I worked at the Western Auto store on Buckner and John West, but I think I can interpret some of the audio...at least I'll try:

"We are the Goodwill Ambassadors of Guadalajara. We bring the finest in Mexican food to your people. We've come to take your women. We will be taking over the rest of Texas in 2008. We will attack Kilgore and Seguin next, followed by Childress and McLendon/Chisholm. May the Tricolor Flag reign supreme over your neighborhood. We mean no harm. We're just taking back what's rightfully ours."

And then something about "F the FCC."

;D

Guess our little "This market has no talent" friends are at it again. ;)

93.1 is KMKT Bells/Sherman/Denison. It broadcasts from the same tower as co-owned KMAD-FM 102.5 in NE Grayson County off US69 midway between Denison and the Garyson/Fannin County line. KLAK 97.5, also co-owned, used to broadcast from there until it moved about 10 miles south and began targeting Collin County.

KMKT is just a class C3 (325' 25 kw max or equivalent); KMAD-FM is a C2 (492' 50 kw max or equivalent). So, KMAD-FM gets out farther. KMKT and KDBN (also a C2) can't do much to improve coverage since they are first adjacent and not that far apart. KDBN is also constrained by KNOR 93.7, KIKT 93.5, and KDHT 93.3. KDBN uses a directional antenna to deal with KMKT, KDHT, and KIKT. The spacing between KNOR and KDBN prevents either one from really being able to change transmitter locations.

It's like a return to the old days

Eh... Another classic example of "those who don't know their history, are bound to repeat it".
