WEAN 99.7

I was working at 99.3 WBLQ when 99.7 went on the air.I thought at the time when a smaller FM like 99.7 or 99.3 goes on the air. Part of the OBLIGATION of having the license for one these types of FM's was to be community oriented. I don't mean Statewide. I mean something has to go on the air that is in this case related to WAKEFIELD PEACEDALE.An airing of a town council meeting or a half hour public service show talking about an upcoming parade relating to WAKEFIELD,PEACE DALE even Narragansett for that matter.

I like the FM simulcast of WPRO but I thought there had to be something a little more localized hitting the air on a WEAN.

While I sympathize with the sentiment, I don't agree with it. It's no longer 1947, back when FM was is in its infancy, Television not much of a factor, and AM the only game in town, thus giving the do-gooder types the excuse to trot out the tired old argument about "scarcity of spectrum".

You could put on programming like town council meetings....but isn't that better served by public-access cable?

As for high school basketball games....a very old veteran of the radio biz once told me that "only the friends and families of the players actually listen, advertiser support notwithstanding".
