"Weaning" SJ listeners to the Internet

Bill H has brought up the fact that it is necessary to explore new territory. This is of course true for us but the question becomes how do we bring along the listeners and music fans. People are creatures or habit and boomers and even Gen X grew up with radio and don't have the level of mistrust for it or the alt-media savvy lean that the next generations to. To make it worse boomers still think that a progressive era could happen like it did in the 70s, on the radio! Any innovation that is going to happen now is going to happen on the internet so the question becomes: How do we redirect and reeducate our audience so they are able to find their music on the web. This is a critical time because so many listeners are looking for a home. The HD stations are not the answer, they sound just like the corporate stations, sometimes with even more pop and oldies.

There are some excellent stations on the internet, especially the independent ones like the ones on Live365, where there are multiple approaches to the format available. Everything from pure SJ from core and new artists with no covers or pop crossovers to urban leaning to rock/pop leaning to even stations that sound similar to the corporate radio format. All those core artists that you rarely hear on corporate radio are getting extensive play there, everyone from White, Koz, and Braun to the newcomers to the prog/contemporary. Facing too many choices becomes an issue too but all a fan has to do is click on one of the top 15 Live365 stations and they are going to hear hours of real smooth jazz. Once they hear it they will be much less likely to "settle for less." They are settling for less right now because it has been so long since more than one real SJ instrumental got played within an hours time hat they have forgotten how good the real thing is. When they hear it they won't go back.

People in their 30s know their way around the web, I know people in their 40s and 50s that can barely check their e-mail. How do we get them in the front door and at least comfortable enough to click on a website and let it stream? Then the next task is showing them how to buy the music they hear. It's a necessary and tough road to walk, and this is the perfect time to do it before they throw money away on HD or XM right before the merger sterilizes their channels.

Hey AnotherCat, I understand what you're asking, but don't tell me you're giving up the fight to try to influence RADIO into getting it right for its listeners? Are we ready to just let Smooth Jazz die on terrestrial radio, or can we -- all of us who regularly post on this board -- exercise some kind of influence on station programmers & managers to COMPETE against the new media and offer RADIO listeners something worth listening to. If we can't accomplish this, then I believe it will prove to be the beginning of the END of RADIO.

The only thing positive to come out of all these format flips is my little 3 hour a week show has now become more important to some of the promoters. BTW, I am in my late 40's and stream more than anything else for music. Most sights are linked right to Itunes and Amazon to allow you to click on a song title and purchase it instantly. I purchase a ton on Itunes so the process is there. (Thank god for a couple of teenagers in the house cause I blame the Itunes bill on them!!) The HD channels are not a waste. I am on a community station that recently signed on as a HD side channel at 100,000 watts. We are actively promoting and helping this commercial station get receivers in the market. There are stations out there that welcome this content. I make big use of myspace, email etc to promote my show. I have developed a global audience thanks to the internet. Oh, we also broadcast on our own signal as well as available on a cable system covering a large portion of real estate for us and we stream.

It seems that corporate radio has given up on the format. Its too black, and too old for most advertisers these days. So we either get XM, Sirius, HD radios or just listen online at home or work. I have resigned myself to that fact. Man I miss the days I could hear Michael Franks on KOAI. As I type this Franks is on www.neosoulcafe.com. It maybe better for this format to survive in other ways. Maybe the MD's for the HD channels will just open up the playlist and add the new age artists, bring back some Yanni, Swing Out Sister, Alex Bugnon and Chick Corea (electric and acoustic bands). Just play the music.

I've worked for Clear Channel, Cox, and predecessors like SFX and Evergreen. I just don't have any faith in corporate radio at this point in time. The ever-narrowing focus brought by total reliance on numbers generated by badly executed music tests and the assumption that after you reach 35 you only want to hear old music make it impossible to put an entertaining music format on a corporate radio station. I do have faith in brunch shows, and successful brunch shows could spawn some time of more extensive airplay. But if it sounds like what we've got now what's the point.

But if fans and future fans use this time when their markets don't have SJ stations to listen to the internet stations, where they will hear the artists and music they came to the format for in the first place that interest could spawn a more audience-friendly approach to the format on-air. People only settle for less when they don't know there is more out there. Remember, the original 2nd wave of SJ stations came into being in the late 80s due to the amount of interest in instrumental music over that decade. They shoulda continued to dance with the one that brung 'em!

This music is extremely appealing, especially when you focus on entertainment, escapism, and just flat out great catchy songs instead of riffy relaxing background wallpaper and 35 year old songs. But if people don't know the entertaining, catchy songs are out there how will they know that they want to hear more of them? So for now we do need to get them over to the web for more White, Koz, Braun, Elliot, Groove, Rippingtons, Abair, Boney, etc and less Eagles, Ronstadt, BabyFace, old Motown, Braxton, Collins and Clapton.
