Weather changes at Sacramento stations

Aside from the staff changes at KOVR, which debuted its new anchors, set and graphics this week... there have been some fairly significant weather changes on-air in the past six months.

Just this week, KXTV's chief meterologist Elyssa Lynn said she's leaving the station... as Darla Givens gets ready to come back from maternity leave.

It's a friendly parting according to Sam McMannis's report in the Sacramento Bee. (Always a good read. Bookmark the section).

Perhaps KMAX "Good Morning, Sacrmento" Chief weather-seer Tom Loffman will wind up at KXTV, since he's being replaced by sister KOVR's Cody Stark as a better fit for the show. That's according to KOVR/KMAX GM Bruno Cohen (quoted in the Bee). Cohen said Loffman would be doing some freelancing for KOVR.

If Loffman makes the switch, he'd be one of Sacramento's "old line" weathermen at KXTV, where Harry Stockman is holding forth on weekends after a lengthy absence from the local weather scene. Harry was first at KXTV after a stint at KCRA. Loffman's worked at KCRA, too.

Noon weather guy and reporter Gregg Lalka joined KXTV in June 2005, from KTVN, the Reno CBS affiliate.

Reno is were KTXL's main meterologist Pat Hambright went in September. He's reporting during KOLO's early evening newscasts and anchoring the 11 p.m. weekday broadcast. Hambright is another KCRA alum. He's another multi-faceted broadcaster... serving post-KCRA as news director at Chico's NBC station, KNVN, before KHSL-TV's management took over running the NBC station's shop.

KTXL promoted Kristina Werner to replace Hambright. She also came to 40 from KNVN. The station's website lists Louisa Hodge as the weekend weather forecaster.

But I could have sworn I saw former KXTV weekend weatherman (whose name I can't remember) on KTXL not long ago.

Interesting to note where the winds blow folks.

IIRC... KXTV's morning weatherwoman Monica Woods was the weekend forecaster at KTXL before moving to KXTV. She was replaced by Darla Givens, who also went to KXTV.

Ted.

You did. His name is John D. Maher! Does an excellent job with the weather. I couldn't figure out why KXTV did not renew his contract. Anyway it is KXTV's loss and KTXL's gain!

It's actually called "Good Day Sacramento." Anyway...

Seeing that Dennis Shanahan has been doing the morning weathercasts on KOVR since they've moved the morning newscast back to the West Sacramento studios, that leaves me wondering who will do the weekend evening weathercasts. Might Loffman surface there for a while?

In my opinion, Shanahan is nowhere near ready to be taking on the weekday morning job (or the weekend evening one, for that matter).

I doubt Loffman would seriously consider taking another job in the market. He came out of retirement to initially do the Good Day Sacramento weather on a temporary basis...a temp job that turned into a permanent one.

That was J.D. Maher, the fourth member of the KXTV weather team and who frequently subbed on the weekends or mornings for the time that either Monica Woods or Darla Givens were off on their alternating maternity leave periods. I think Maher was a solid weather anchor, and would be a good fit if KOVR is looking for some actual weather talent for their weekend newscasts.

IMHO, Darla Fivens I think looks somewhat like WAGA's FOX 5 Weekend anchor Deidra Dukes who anchors the 6 & 10 PM newscasts in Atlanta. She used to anchor at KJEO (Now KGPE) Channel 47 for their weekend newscasts from 1990-1994 and then onto KRCR-TV Channel 7 from 1994-1995 before she moved to Cox owned WPXI 11 NBC from 1995-1998 and then moved to Cox Flagship station WSB-TV ABC Channel 2 in Atlanta for 7 years before taking the weekend anchor at the FOX O&O in Atlanta. Another one of their weather anchors is Joanne Feldman who worked at KMPH in Fresno on Weekends from 1998-1999 and KFSN ABC 30 as weekday morning anchor and weather anchor from 2000-2002 before she moved to Chief Weather Anchor at ABC O&O WTVD Channel 11 in Raliegh-Durham NC, from 2002-2007 before taking the weekend job at FOX 5 Atlanta. IMO, Joanne looks a little like Monica Woods and former KNTV weather anchor Shannon O'Donnell who is now back at her old job at KING 5 and NorthWest Cable News in Seattle, WA where she started. BTW: Louis Hodge Looks just like Shannon O'Donnell which is so true!

UPDATE: Louisa Hodge and Dennis Shanahan have swapped positions. Louisa is now reporting while Dennis takes over Louisa's old weather position on weekends.
