Weather Channel HD w/o Local Stats

Hi! Just wondering: My cable system recently added several more HD channels including the Weather Channel in HD. Problem is the HD version does not show local stats and regional maps like the regular Weather Channel. Instead they show a national summary of maps and city stats like the Weather Channel on DirecTV. Is this just my cable company or is it the Weather Channel? Whatever the cause, the local-regional info is an important part of the value of the Weather Channel and the HD version should carry the same info tailored for each local areas as the regular version.

It is your cable company. They likely don't have an HD IntelliSTAR to put up the local forecast.

Right. Your cable company provides IntelliStar inserts for Local Forecast segments, and overlays over the national programming at the bottom of the screen using SD equipment most likely, which they've had for years. The new HD signal will require an HD-capable unit of the same kind to be installed at the cable company's programming headend. Until this happens, you're just watching what the rest of America watches on satellite or direct feeds of the national Weather Channel feed.

I'm not sure that having HD local forecast information is to be considered "essential" right now, and I'm sure the cable company accounting department agrees, since it is readily available to all standard subscribers in SD format, even those with HD boxes. :) Consider also, they might just raise your HD programming rate(s) to pay for that new IntelliSTAR upgrade whenever it finally happens.
