"Weather Channel" in Judgement City (in the movie "Defending Your Life":

74 DEGREES AND SUNNY ALL THE TIME
(always good weather in Heaven!)

In Boston there's no smooth jazz radio station so just about the only way (outside of a couple college radio specialty shows) to hear smooth jazz is to tune into those "weather on the 8s" forecasts. I nickname smooth jazz "Weather Channel
Music".

I'll tune in for the forecasts and radar but that's about it.

Last night there were heavy thunderstorms in the Boston area. Power outages, flooding, etc. What was on the Weather Channel? Storm Stories--stuff about past hurricanes, etc. WHAT ABOUT NOW? HOW ABOUT a CURRENT weathercast? Guess I'll have to go online for that.

This is why I don't watch The Storm Stories, I mean The Weather Channel.
NBC Weather Plus is much better, as it actually shows weather and the local cut ins are done by local meteorologists, not people in Atlanta.<P ID="signature">______________

I agree, I hate Storm Stories. That kind of show should be on the Discovery Channel. Every time I need a forecast that show is on.

Only if you have cable. I have DirecTV and they have national forceast and condtions but nothing local.
 
Well, if it's regular programming, they do have the warning ticker on but I'm not sure if they have it on during Storm Stories or not. I think by the time Storm Stories was on most of the severe weather was already gone (warnings off but
still some heavy rain) anyway. At least last night. However I don't think they have the "weather on the 8s" with radar, etc., during Storm Stories.

Someone else responded to the FR re-printing of the article (linked above) and also said they
couldn't get severe weather updates during Storm Stories--and they lived in DC
where T-storms frequently happen just as the show is going on (8-9 pm)!

Whenever I see some of the new TWC spots and promos, I keep thinking they should've changed the name of the channel to "Lifetime Weather For Women" :)

It's actually not bad to have some new stuff on there, but I just have a feeling they're going to get away from the whole "weather geek" aspect of it, and I can just see them doing a friggin' reality show, or make-up tips, or weather-related game shows, or something.

Or, even worse, they'll do some research and decide weather ain't where it's at anymore, they'll change the name of the channel to simply "TWC" and start doing other things. Weather will be something secondary that they do at 6am, 6pm, and 10pm only.

Hmmm...Comcast's Weatherscan (a service of The Weather Channel) still has the old logo up in the bottom right.

And I'm in Atlanta too...you'd think they'd remember that.

Dish Network is the same way, but at least they have a local weather channel where you can pull up current conditions and the 5 day forecast any time you want.<P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by ccmfan on 08/16/05 01:58 AM.</FONT></P>
 
Traffic reports on The Weather Channel

I've noticed that, at least here in Phoenix, there are now traffic reports on The Weather Channel (I'm not sure if this was in place before the logo change?) They appear as a scroll along the bottom of the screen, and it also appears during the same segment where they show the local forecast. This is also part of what's offered on WeatherScan.

Examples of what I've seen on the scroll in the past few minutes:

"I-10 WB: 27 min from Chandler Blvd to US-60/Superstition Fwy"
"Loop-202 WB: 7 min from Loop 101 to Sky Harbor Blvd/Exit 5"

In addition, they are displaying information about ramp restrictions or closures, i.e.

Construction, I-17 Southbound
Greenway on ramp - on going construction

There is a voiceover on WeatherScan promoting traffic.com.

These were in place before the logo/tagline change ("Bringing weather to life?" Who thought that one up?). I saw the same thing in Atlanta a few weeks ago. The traffic reports on WeatherScan are better, IMHO.

Yes, but...

Dish Network's Instant Weather is typically several hours old (at least regarding the current conditions), and there is no radar, which would really be helpful. I usually get the radars from the local channels off the Internet, because they're typically not as old as the one on the TWC site. (Except for WFAA/Channel 8 -- they require a registration, and I refuse to do that just to see the radar.)

At least DirecTV shows a temperature slate at the bottom of the screen...why can't the Dish Network receivers (at least the DP301) be programmed to do that?<P ID="signature">______________

In Jackson and Dyersburg, TN the trailer during the local forecast has ads for local businesses.

I used to like Storm Stories when they first aired, but now they just air the same ones over and over again. I mean, these things are so old that Jim Cantore actually has "hair"! As a concept, it was TWC's first foray into non-forecast nightly programming, and it might be more palatable if there were some NEW stories.

It is annoying. particularly on DirecTV, when SS is on and there is no local info when you need some weather reassurance. If DirecTV can regulate sport packages by zip code, there has to be a way to provide the same by locality (if not individual zip code).
