WEATHER CHANNELS Friday Night movie

Just to piss off people looking for weather on the 8's. It's working too. ::)

Not to mention that they are already rerunning their movies. March Of The Penguins (in heavily edited form) airs again tomorrow night.

Perhaps it has something to do with producing revenue for NBC-Universal, who now own the Weather Channel.

Of course, the danger is diluting the product so much that the regular "weather" audience declines. Then where are you?

If the 'regular' audience were so large at those times, it quite possibly wouldn't have been happening...but it's not that large.

I get that, but at the same time, "branding" of a certain product is important. If regular weather channel watchers (throughout the day AND night) see a movie instead of their usual programming there is a risk that they may be less likely to come back to the channel as a matter of habit. Who knows? I guess cable ratings will ultimately determine whether this approach works. Personally, when I switch to the weather channel I know what I want to see, and it isn't a movie, despite it being somehow distantly related to weather. Oh, and btw, how many "weather" movies are there really? I can think of three of four good ones, and maybe another five bad ones!

From a link at the previous thread on this subject, Weather Channel exec Geoffrey Darby mentioned that TWC is showing movies, as weather was always a "star".

Among those The Weather Channel has shown, only "The Perfect Storm" was actually weather-related -- "March of the Penguins", "Misery" and "Deep Blue Sea" only had weather elements as part of the background. In other words, weather was a major co-star in "The Perfect Storm", while it was nothing more than an "extra" in the others.

Hmm, "Misery"...is this movie really about weather? Weather is just a sub-plot to advance the story here. What is TWC thinking?

I would bet their audience is a lot bigger then they think. The trouble is, that most of them are just tuning in for a few minutes on the 8's for the local weather. I would hope that they get more for spots around the 8's. That would make sense to me.

ANY movie could be about weather in theory, whether it be The Wizard of Oz with its tornado, or just a misty day on the golf course in Happy Gilmore.
