Weather coverage, or the lack thereof

Was there any weather coverage on radio during one of the many tornado warnings Saturday?

Since that last supercell was aimed right at me, getting dressed and ready to duck and cover seemed like the right thing to do. As I watched that shear marker twirl around on TV, I thought maybe I'd find a live announcer or a simulcast somewhere on the dial of the portable radio in my lap... nothing but regular broadcasting. Geez, glad I didn't get blown off the grid.

Signs of the times I guess, the further demise of local radio. Selling Beta Prostate trumps saving lives.

I remember when people bemoaned the fact that stations would just flip a switch to simulcast teeveenewz weather people audio instead of offering in-house coverage.

Now there's not even anyone left to flip a switch! (Personally, I'd rather hear Weather Person tell me what's-a-happenin' on the radio than some jock who has lived in the city for six months, but that's just me.)

Channel 5 was running a crawl at one point which, I assumed, indicated they were being simulcast on 103, 95.7 and WREC. I assume, because I always caught the tail-end of the message, and never saw what it actually said; plus I didn't independently confirm by actually listening to hear for myself.

If that was Saturday evening, then it was true.

Still, I don't mind saying that I was embarrassed Saturday morning. I listened from 9:30 straight through till about noon and absolutely no one broke in. Talk, music, whatever...no one broke in. It was sad.

I know this was almost 3 weeks ago but to restore your faith in radio at least a little, not only did I announce the warnings after every song on the station I was working on, I announced warnings on the other 5 stations in our building at least twice. It is sad in some ways how radio has changed. I remember a time when there would have been 5 other people here working on those other 5 stations. But there are still real people who really care working in this business.
Please be careful when using strong words like "all" , "none", "always", and "never". There are very few absolutes in radio.

I'll echo Bailey. I was on the Max that Saturday. About twenty past ten I switched to WMC and ran their weather coverage for about an hour. For the rest of my time on air I broke in every other song, and sometimes more often, with whatever new news was breaking, a rundown of street closures, news on the Med and the prison in Millington, and the latest on where ever the worst of the storm was at the moment. KIX did much the same thing.

Good on ya, Wes! Of course, I'm not a bit surprised. You always pulled a strong stroke oar.
