Weather personality in am? Why?

Do we really need to have an actual forecaster on ourr local am shows? Unless there is are hurricane coming to one of the coasts or is a big storm brewing, couldn't the morning shows just give a quick daily/five day update on the forecast? Just seems unnecessary to devote so much time to weather when basically they could put up on the screen, the temps, the forecast and that is about it.

Following that logic, we don't need any weather forecasters in Phoenix. Even during severe weather situations (which rarely happen), the forecasters are so far behind the curve that they are generally worthless. I find it better to look out the window and at the noaa.gov radar.

I grew up in Seattle. For many years, there were no weekend weather forecasters. The original am newscasts didn't have dedicated forecasters either.

I think weather forecasts during all newscasts are a big deal. While a lot of the time it doesn't take a lot of brain bites to know what the weather will be in the Valley, I think it serves a purpose.

So will a station 'blink first' and just have the anchors do a "quick daily/five day update" and will the others follow suit? Is it worth the cost of a dedicated weather-guesser?

On a number of occasions I've observed 3, 5 and 10, when the "personality" was enroute or delayed in getting the remote set up, the in studio crew (anchors, host, readers, leftover clowns, etc.) have been able to fill in with either an already prepared full weather segment or even an abbreviated (current temp, expected temps and a 5/7 day forecast) segment with very few problems.

On a different but related topic, does 3TV "Forecaster" Brittney Shipp have to say "degrees" with almost every temperature she reads?

Along the same lines, does channel 15 weekend WX guesser Rich Dahlquist
have to say "around 77 degrees" when noting currents on the state map?
These are all hourly readings and are specific numbers--not projections.

Brittney and Rich are hereby inducted into the Jim Cross "yeah Ned" club. ;)

I watched Shipp for several segments and got the pattern: when she's reading temps around the Valley/around the state she starts with and the last two she'll say degrees. Example:

1010, 97, 84, 82, 910, and 990

Checking Dahlquist, standby...

Is anyone impressed with the new main guy, James Quinones, on 12 News? Supposedly, he was well-liked in San Diego, but I'm just not getting IT. I would rather have Jerrid back doing the weekday evening weather. He is enthusiastic, eager (almost too eager at times), and knows his weather stuff. Good heavens, even Caribe would be pleasant to look at in the evenings! :D

Another Weather Personality Quirk:

I've noticed that when Caribe Devine, especially when she's on location, throws it back to the studio anchors she almost always says "back to you guys." Even after she has previously acknowledged the names of the anchors she's working with. I'm always surprised she doesn't say "back to you (fill in names)."

Fully in agreement, formeraa. The few times I've seen Quiñones, I haven't been impressed.

I just want to say I have enjoyed watching 12News new weather man James Quinones (also Jimmy Q). I think he fits in there at 12News he gives us a different kind of weather forcast then the other news stations. TV 3 I could not stand watching Brad Perry to do weather also Brittney Shipp on weekends there at TV3 doesn't seem enthused about doing weather. For Channel 5 Sean Mclaughlin I hate when he does anchor man duties with forcasting duties .He needs to stick to doing weather he is no anchor man. Channel 10 Dave Munsey is only the best out there that has been here in valley forever. Channel 15 Bill Bellis weather is to dull........

It's interesting here in the Valley. I would definitely say that the two weekend am newscasts do NOT have a dedicated weather forecaster. Brittany and Caribe are truly live reporters in the am, much more so than weather forecasters. 3 and 12 do save a body on the weekend morning shift. Also, when Brad did the weather on 3 TV weekday ams, it also saved 3 another body. Now, they have April and Brad working everyday.

I agree that Dave Mounsey is the most experienced weather person in the Valley. I like him but I wish Fox would give him a little bit more time at 9pm -- perhaps 2 minutes in the first half hour and 3 minutes in the second half hour. I have been watching 3 TV at 9 because they tend to give Royal a lot of time, even though Beverly is a terrible anchor (the "Patti" stumbling issues seem to be catching).

I'm still not enamored with James Quinones, but he'll probably grow on me like Kevin Hunt. It took many months to get used to Kevin Hunt. I kept thinking that Coop would have done a better job, but now I like Kevin. It will probably be the same for James (or Jimmy Q or whatever his name is).
