Weather reports on WBZ 1030

WBZ has always used the WBZ-TV weather forecasters after morning drive on weekdays. Today I noticed that the AccuWeather reports have continued all day.

It will be interesting to see if the WBZ-TV feature on their 8 p.m. news on channel 38 to see what’s on the Dan Rea show continues tonight.

They have stopped using anybody from the TV side on the AM side, there is no reason to think, short of paid placement ( and I hope they disclose it if they go that route) for the TV side to plug the AM radio station that is not owned by them anymore.

Chances are they have walled off the 2 operations physically too.

Was wondering what would happen there. They may continue the 8:55pm cross promo since later on Lisa Hughes always comes on Nightside for a few minutes to promote the 11pm TV news - maybe it is a trade.

I noticed driving across update NY a couple weeks ago that several of the iHeart stations use Accuweather including WGY. I thought iHeart may have had an in house replacement but maybe Accuweather will stay. In Rochester WHAM-AM is still using weather from WHAM-TV and maybe some other content even though they are not co-owned. Seems like there are more variations between markets within iHeart than I thought.

Maybe the constant CBS TV promotions will disappear from radio as well? To be replaced by iHeart app. promotions and those bogus national contests.......

For physically walling off things in the building - wonder if that is possible or worth the money since radio is leaving in less than a year. I could see everyone being under orders to keep paperwork locked up though to prevent "spying".

In Connecticut i-Heart has arrangements with NBC 30, WFSB Channel 3, and FOX 61.

NBC 30, the NBC O&O provides weather updates on all the Connecticut i-Heart stations.

Rachael Lutzker is the morning traffic reporter on all the Connecticut i-Heart stations and appears on camera to do traffic on Tribune's FOX 61 Morning News. She also does an air shift on 105.9 The River. 3PM-7PM. (Before going over to FOX 61, Rachael used to do traffic on camera on WFSB).

Eric Parker from WFSB Channel 3 the Merideth owned CBS station does news headlines during the 8AM hour on i-Heart's 105.9 The River.

Renee Dinino the midday jock on The River 105.9 and host of i-Heart's Public Affairs show "Community Access" often fills-in on Camera as the traffic reporter on WFSB.

What WHAM-AM/TV are doing gives me hope that WBZ-AM/TV can follow the same model.

CBS-TV promos vs iHeart promos? No contest: I'd take the TV promos first (one guy's opinion here, mind you). I hear those incessant iHeart promos when I listen to Rush on WKOX.

I agree completely with your last two sentences re physical separation.

Has anyone else noticed that all of the (WBZ) TV weather people have lost their “AccuWeather” status since the radio-TV breakup?

Uncle,

A lot of us noticed a LOT of things that are different at WBZ-AM since 18 Nov 2017, but if we point them out and make what are perceived to be "negative" comments about them, well, we are uninformed, have no idea how the business of radio works, and/or we're just plain anti-iHeart, so, uh, no, didn't notice a thing. Nope.

There is a lot that changes when a TV and radio combo are split.

Sometimes contracts that one part of the combo had are not "sharable". That might be the Accuweather situation.

Sometimes the new owner has their own global corporate agreements and they simply are "switching suppliers".

In this case, we can also look at the statements of David Field of Entercom that CBS had neglected research, facilities and general updating in many areas. It's likely that iHeart also felt that WBZ needed some changes to remain competitive and productive.

And finally, with a split of a combo, some job functions change and some technical operations change. There are going to be short-term hiccups, particularly since there was no LMA and little opportunity to plan "on site" since the transactions were being scrutinized by the DoJ and FCC.

After all, it has been all of 8 (eight) [VIII] days since the closing.

David,

I'll be serious.

Before AccuWeather, tWBZ-AM did use WBZ-TV meteorologists. This was in the days before they were NewsRadio 1030; mostly music during the day, solid hourly local newscasts, talk evenings, talk/music overnights. WBZ Radio began using AccuWeather since the late 70s or early 80s. They went "all news" in 1991. AccuWeather provided a much needed service, since the station's forecasts were given at 10-minute intervals throughout the news day parts.

However, for the past few years, they began this "WBZ-TV/AccuWeather" co-branding of their weather forecasts. The forecast might be from channel 4, or it might be from AccuWeather. I could not discern a predictable pattern.

Now, since the split, it's AccuWeather exclusively; the WBZ-TV meteorologists are gone from WBZ-AM's airwaves, at least for now. So, in effect, this is a return to what was done formerly, not anything new and startling. I, and several others, remain optimistic that iHeart will soon strike a deal with WBZ-TV to once again partner in news coverage and weather reports.

Out of curiosity, have you noticed a difference between the two weather reports? Is one more accurate than the other? Because typically all weather reports basically come from the same place, which is NOAA.

Right. I wasnʼt surprised by this severing: When someone said that -AM wasnʼt using -TVʼs wx people at all anymore, the first thing I did was check the next TV newscast to see if the “Accu” logo was still next to their name—which it wasnʼt.
I just find it rather amusing that they were given the tag to begin with, when they obviously had nothing to do with AccuWx, other than -AM has them as their outside wx service.
Kind of like when a local police dept. helps the feds in an investigation: The officers are deputized as federal agents with badges and IDs, then, when the arrests are done, the badges and IDs are collected and they are no longer feds!

WBZ began using AccuWX in 1985. I was told to get listener comments about AccuWX at a remote to use in promos. Not one of the listeners who gathered around The Incredible Broadcast Machine that day knew what I was talking about when I mentioned the Accu Weather forecasts so we had to use some of the administrative staff to say how much they like AccuWx.

Elliott Abrams and AccuWX had been heard on WHDH before moving to BZ. Abrams btw is 71 and has been with AccuWX since 1967.
