Weather War at CBS 4 ????????

We're wondering why they're having so many problems at 4. This, from today's Herald, may provide one explanation:

"Things have been getting downright ugly over at Channel 4. Ratings are not great, the GM and sales czar were sent packing, the 4 p.m. news is being canceled due to lack of viewers and now we hear that the camera jockeys are at war with their 30-something assignment editor!
Word from Soldiers Field Road is that the cameramen were less than pleased to get a ranting missive from Deanna Miller about their failure to make weather pictures. Naturally, as these things sometimes do, the memo found its way to the Track’s inbox.
“It is imperative that you all shoot weather when it happens,” she wrote. Leading us to wonder: When does weather not happen??? But we digress . . . .
“You all balk at it and that’s fine and quite frankly I don’t care,” Deanna’s diatribe continued. “It drives us all crazy.”

Then things got really ugly as Miller converted to capitals!
“ANY TIME IT RAINS, SNOWS, SLEETS, IS HOT, COLD, SUNNY, CLOUDY, WINDY . . . SHOOT IT,” she wrote. “EACH OF YOU SHOULD COME BACK TO THE STATION EVERY DAY WITH A WEATHER PICTURE. I SHOULDN’T EVER HAVE TO ASK FOR WEATHER PICTURES AGAIN. I WILL EXPECT WEATHER SHOTS EVERY DAY UNLESS YOU CALL AND
EXPLAIN TO ME WHY YOU CAN’T SEEM TO FIT ONE INTO YOUR
SCHEDULE. AND JUST BECAUSE YOU EXPLAIN IT, DOESN’T MEAN I
WILL ACCEPT YOUR EXPLANATION.” "

O.K. Got it? Weather shots important!
Channel 4 spokesgal Ro Dooley said that Miller was merely doing her job by encouraging the troops to provide footage of the great outdoors.
“It is a standard assignment at every TV station to shoot weather video,” she said. “This was a reminder of just how important this is.”

Just to think they they used to be Number 1 in town. Man oh man how things can change as fast as the weather. ;-)

things could be fixed quickly by doing a complete overhaul of their news/wx/sports dept. they can't compete with the talent and image they have now. that includes people who work off air. they need to gut the whole place and start from scratch. but the suits seem to be happy with being last so things will stay the same for a while.

I don't know if that is the normal management procedure at WBZ TV, but having worked in markets big and small, this is the kind of memo you would expect to find in market #190, not market #5 (or whatever number Boston is). When you treat your staff like a group of inexperienced production monkeys just out of broadcast school, then that is the kind of work you will get.

Based on, not just what is posted here, but given the way Channel 4 has been doing the past couple of years ratings wise, it seems to me that what is needed is a total revamp of staff from top to bottom. CBS needs to fire everyone, and then look all over the Boston and the Northeast TV community and find experienced people with good leadership skills. What they need to do is "Re-birth" the WBZ TV or "EYEWITNESS NEWS" brands, and bring in anchors, reporters and personell that everyone knows. Essentially, they need to look at long time sister station KYW 3 (CBS 3 in Philly), and do what they did.

Otherwise, I'm thiking CBS should probably consider selling off the TV portion. Sad to say, but if they can't make WBZ TV 4 competitve, it needs to go to someone who can. And if that means the break up of a long time Boston broadcast Radio-TV combo, so be it. (Digression: Besides, I hear NBC is in the market for some Boston property, and wouldn't WHDH rather have the number 1 network on TV? Maybe NBC belongs on 4 anyway.)

Ok, I will ignore the 4 alarm fire so I can take pictures of it raining. Ridiculous.

or

We interupt this program for the following breaking news.

It's Sunny and 74 degrees with a dry wind coming in from the north.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program.

Let's start with the wx department. Bring back Bruce Schwoegler (sp?) and hire Todd Gross for starters. These are known people.

The sports department is actually pretty solid with long-time personalities.

The news department needs lots and lots of help. Start with the core long-time reporters. Sign them to long-term contracts and give them prime assignments. Then, hire New England-bred female anchors to co-anchor with Jack Williams and Chris May. Promote Joe Shortsleeve back to anchor.
