WEBB: Scott White Pleads Guity

Scott White in court today ... pleaded guilty to SECOND (reduced from first) degree murder of Mike Webb. Not a big surprise, but seemed this case had drifted into the ether ... so was glad to hear the update.

Yes, LBB, I noticed this from the Seattle media today as well. Seems like a light sentence, but I guess the avenues of justice allow for such. Mental illness, on drugs, no premeditation, etc., etc. I'm not a legal expert, so I will let it be. But, perhaps, final closure on this very sad case.

This is one screwed-up kid and thanks to his history of being a complete f%%%-up is going to be dealing with reduced charges, free "room & board", etc. I'm all for giving chances...but when someone has a history of gouging society AND is, essentially rewarded for being a walking whack job, it makes it rather, uh, challenging to get up in the morning and play by the rules.

Thanks for those links, LBB.

Both LBB and I knew and worked with Mike Webb. I'm sorry, but someone who murders someone with an ax and gets just 12 years just seems wrong. I know I said that the justice system seems to allow for these type of penalties, but I'm not sure the system is right.

I can understand how the prosecution might think they couldn't prove premeditation, but to get only get 12 years is simply terrible. DA probably thought with all the mitigating circumstances there was a chance for someone on a jury to acquit. And that would have been worse.

The prosecution might think they couldn't prove premeditation to a jury. But according to court documents, Scott White had already CONFESSED to detectives he laid an axe under his side of the bed in Mike's bedroom the night PRIOR to the murder. White had the option to have an attorney with him. Instead, he confessed with a consistency to the details that only Webb's killer could have known.

Could the likelihood Scott White had schizoaffective disorder been a determining factor in the prosecution's decision? Probably. But this much is clear: It doesn't explain away the fact that he not only went out of his way to hide Webb's body and clean up the crime scene to some degree, he also hocked off Mike's property, used Mike's EBT card and took over Mike's house with his friends while Mike Webb laid dead in his own basement. He also texted Mike's friends and family under the pretenses of being Mike Webb from Mike's own cell phone.

It wasn't the PERFECT murder, but Scott White did have a surprising amount of attention to detail for something that wasn't premeditated. You also have to remember that prior to his body being found. there were also two searches of Mike Webb's home by police. Even with cadaver dogs, the detectives found nothing.

Now I'm not Perry Mason or Joyce Brothers, but if this was a homicide by reason of mental illness in my own layman eyes, it really doesn't look like it. Honestly, in EVERY scenario I can imagine, it doesn't. If the actual motive behind the killing itself was vague in the court papers, what Scott White did afterwards was NOT.

Yes, there are still details yet to be revealed and many more that never will be. Because unfortunately, all we have are Scott White's side of the story. Mike Webb is not here to tell us his.

This case had also been going over two years and I really think this was just a cheap and fast way for the prosecution to put an end to it. If it dragged on any further, I can see how the chances of an acquittal would have been greater. And the fact they dragged it out for as long as they did ought to be a crime itself....Just my opinion.

The maximum sentence Scott White could get for this is 20 years. And I hope the judge gives him that with no chance of early parole......

Terrible is right. 12 years is unacceptable. I miss Mike Webb. I miss his passion for politcal and social issues of course, but mostly I miss is love and knowledge of music. His shows were never dull.
