Webcam Suggestions?

I'm planning to add a webcam to my studio. Have you installed one in yours? Are you happy with it? What is the brand and model number? Can you provide a link to the feed so I can see it in action? Anything you learned that you'd do differently?

I have a dedicated server with plenty of bandwidth to link the cam up to, but I really could use some suggestions as to which cam to get. If the camera has a mic, I would like to be able to shut it off, as I don't want audio on the cam feed.

Thanks for your suggestions!

In my studio I use the built-in iSight camera on my Intel-based Macintosh laptop. Since I have both MacOS X and Windows XP Pro on it I can use it in a variety of applications. It's been a long time since I've used a dedicated external camera, but I recall the Logitec cameras being ok - nothing special but useable.

I suggest you stay away from web cameras... They pretty much all (even the more expensive ones) have poor picture quality :( I don't know why is that, but that has been my experience. After a cheap webcam I bought an expensive ($300) wireless Logitech webcam thinking it must have good picture quality for that money, and boy was I wrong. The picture quality was very bad, the colors, resolution, noise, everything...

That's when I decided to go a different route and bought a color Sony surveillance camera for less than $200 (this one http://tinyurl.com/ptamy) and a cheap video capture card. What a picture!! The difference to the Logitech was more than night and day. Speaking of which, this camera will work at night and very low light conditions as well. It has automatic DC iris control for lenses, the picture is very, very good, high resolution, no noise... All in all, I'm very happy with this solution.

To see it in action, go to http://radiostudent.redirectme.net and scroll to the bottom of the page where you'll find links to Real Video and Windows Media video streams. The Real format has a somewhat better picture coding algorithm than the Windows Media and therefore a better picture quality. Of course, the original picture (without coding it to low bitrates) is even better.

Are you sure it's working at the moment? All I get is the :19 intro vid, then nothing.

Turn the damn lights on in there... :D All I saw was some lights on the board...no idea what time it is there....put together pretty good, impressive.

I use a regular digital camera for my webcam. A Digital Concepts 2.1mp that I got at Walmart for $40. It has THE best webcam picture I've ever used. Sharp and crisp. If anyone would like to see the picture (if you have Yahoo Messenger), send me a private message and I'll be happy to demonstrate it for you.
