Hello,
I was looking for some info on how to set up a very inexpensive (or even better free) webcast of our college radio station. I am looking at Shoutcast and seeing what that is all about. Our college station is carrier currnet am, and we would love to put it online so people can hear all over, but have next to nothing for a budget. Are there any ad based services? Anything?


Does anyone know of an inexpensive way to do it?

All you need is a semi decent PC, a fat enough internet pipe to handle the amount of listeners you think you're going to get, and a copy of a shoutcast encoder, Real Producer, or Windows Media Encoder.

Most barter-based streaming services went belly up several years ago.

Live365 offers a fairly good turnkey deal with their "Pro" stations, which would be what you'd want to simulcast your existing carrier current station.

SHOUTcast is probably the easier streaming service to roll your own, if you have access to the bandwidth. Nullsoft's setup instructions are pretty easy to follow.

You might learn more about how to set up your own stream by looking at this basic how-to primer, which is only slightly dated.

When you're looking as costs, don't forget to consider the copyright issue. Under current DMCA rates, it'll cost you $275-$525 a year. These rates for 2006-2010 are presently under arbitration and might change. ASCAP/BMI/SESAC royalties are likely already covered by your institution, but it's something to look into.
 
i would suggest streaming from your own server if your lister load is going to be light
