WECK/Buffalo

From R&R:

WECK/Buffalo has moved to a Classic Country format from Jones' Music Of Your Life, which it had been airing 24/7. WECK has been billing $1 million a year, but all of the station's ratings have come from the upper end of the 35-64 demographic.

Jesus H. Christ! This little 1 kilowatter on 1450, obviously running completely automated, was doing a million bucks a year, and Infinity decided that it wasn't enough, and they could do better with classic country? In Buffalo?

Maybe Howard and Mel are right, after all.<P ID="signature">______________

To the best of my knowledge...classic country, while an interesting nitch format...has never really been highly-successfull financially anywhere...has it???

Most AMs that are still decent advertising billers have a heavily composition of news, talk, and/or sports play-by-play....even if they also play some music during their broadcast day.....music's really a filler between the full-service elements.

Ok, the station is making 1 million a year. WHO CARES if it's all from the older crowd? If someone was giving me a million, I wouldn't give two hoots if it were from a 90-year-old or a 30-year-old. Am I missing something here??

I don't think so, except some small market AMs that have been country forever and sort of gradually moved to classic country as the mainstream audience moved to FM.

But I don't know of any classic country stations started in recent years that have really been successful. If they're on AM it's usually just to keep something on the frequency cheap. If it's on FM, it's usually operated by an established mainstream country station that wants two country stations to better fend off the competition.

There have been a lot of "classic country" or "country oldies" attempts over the years, but country really doesn't work without current songs.

Re: Classic Country in Buffalo, Elsewhere

Not sure financially, but the most successful classic country AM I've seen 12+ ratings-wise is WGOC, Kingsport, TN, market 98, where an FM hit country has dominated the market for many years, and WGOC is always top 5.

The other factor in the WECK move is that the Buffalo area already has an AM classic country that's been around many years, WXRL, plus country legends 820 CHAM in nearby Hamilton, Ontario, so you are not just adding this format but competing for listners in this market.

The sales departments don't want to service the clients..MOYL is not "cool"..but how WECK expects to out-do Ramblin' Lou's legacy WXRL is nuts. Just not enough hungry folks to serve up a big sandwich.
