WECK Getting another FM signal

Another translator or two and I'll need to dedicate one whole screen on my car to WECK presets. Still waiting for that "major FM".

And we are still waiting for you to be right about something....anything. Our new translator is our biggest yet

and yet, Buddy, you said you were done on this board .. but you keep coming back. You defend your radio station to a bunch of people for the most part who hide behind a keyboard and we dont know who they really are.. and theres a good chance dont matter a hill o beans to your revenue or ratings. You waste time and energy on something that doesnt matter. Why? Defending, bragging about and promoting your radio station over and over again to a bunch of radio geeks doesnt do much at all for you.

I've never seen such a smallER station get so much attention on here...and it's not just because youre supposedly doing so well. you and others fan the flames here, but its the same few people over and over again discussing the station. Bigger stations with bigger signals and better ratings in Buffalo don't get 1/5th the attention little ole' WECK does

The "rest of the story" is that WECK is an example of what traditional over the air radio, well done and targeted at older listeners, can do to create locally successful media companies.

Buddy is not iHeart or Cumulus or Townsquare. His station's model could be used in other markets by present-day sales managers or general managers of large group operations that want to strike out on their own and who believe that htere is a market for a station aimed at older people and the businesses that serve them.

Little ole WECK? Dude, we have a 3.7 share, are a top ten station defeating huge signals with corporate dollars. WDKX IN Rochester has 800 watts FM. it is ranked in the top three. You think WECK is a small station for some reason Not sure why. Plus we have and will be getting even more FM coverage to nearly all the metro. It’s not a small station. Your a small thinker! I’m not. By the way, it only are we crushing stations like JACK , THE BREEZE, ALT BUFFALO, KB, and not far from others like EDGE or GR, but we tie WHTT in 50 plus with a 6.6 share of the entire metro audience. We BEAT WHTT middays. 35 plus WECK is ranked #7. You think that is small before we are not coming to you from the Rand Bldg? WECK beats 50 percent of Buffalo Townsquare stations. And before you put on your thinking cap, realize that in Q1 , 100.1 will launch serving a population of 200000 with more WECK FM. Knowing that, maybe it’s time to go a Country!?

And ya want to know why no other stations get a 5th of the attention that lil ole WECK gets, inside and outside this board? Because nobody gives a **** about those other stations. They are playlists and corporate. They do not market. I take it upon myself to market, that’s why I am here. And it works. Take a look at the interaction of the WECK Facebook page and the sleepy WJYE Facebook page. Zero comparison. Their audience does not give a **** about having a connection with them. It’s a nothing burger. A corporate jukebox. Outside of the Christmas ratings, WECK will continue to beat the hell out of them. I predicted a 4 share when I bought WECK. We are on that cusp. We are well above that cusp with ratings weighting. I then upped the stakes to 5 share. By next summer, with 4 frequencies we will have a 5 share.

Is WECK planning to dump Oldies and flip to Country? Take a look at Buddy's last two posts. If he is crushing the competition as he says, why change format? He implies this in the last sentence of Rant #1.

He also mentioned the sleepy WJYE Facebook page. Since those call letters and station no longer exist, it was put to sleep long ago. Getting "likes" on Facebook doesn't translate into ratings or revenue(See ALT Buffalo)...

What an idiot. Do you know social media at all? I am not talking about "likes" dummy. I am talking about interaction. WECK has more interaction with our social media audience than any station in Buffalo. It's not about "likes", it's about interaction! WTF....are you dumb.

And as far as WJYE, I actually forgot what they call it now. That's how unnoticeable it is in the market. But they did trade for some bus-card advertising, so I suppose I should know. Real big marketing plans.

TBolt is really getting annoying to more than just Buddy! What a waste of time his jabs are! Spend your time more productively and stay off of this forum. This space is for people who love radio and the contributions of people who build it up, not for those wishing to plunder it!

Uh, OK, Dad. We'll get off the lawn.

WDKX is a full Class A FM. Radio-Locator and FCCinfo.com note it operates with 800 Watts ERP, however the antenna height is 165 meters / 541 feet, well above the 100 meters /328 feet maximum prescribed by the FCC for Class A FM stations. Additionally, the station's transmitter and antenna are in the heart of Rochester, radiating a signal that penetrates the urban core, the first ring suburbs and equally important, car receivers.

The 60 dBu contour can be seen here > (https://www.fcc.gov/media/radio/map...OCHESTER&state=NY&fileno=BMLH-19980401KG&.map)

Speaking of car receivers - it comes in clear as a bell as you descend the hill on the Thruway eastbound near Genesee Community College.

The FCC sets the various classes of stations with a power and height equivalency with calculated distance to the 54 and 60 dbu curves. Stations may have a maximum power as listed, which can not be exceeded. But if a station chooses to, it can trade power for height. This station has thus kept its class A status, without exceeding the proper calculated coverage area.

And because it's short-spaced to WHTT on 104.1 in Buffalo, WDKX is actually limited to the old 3 kW/100 m class A equivalent, not the new 6 kW/100 m version of class A. In theory, we could put in a directional antenna limiting power in the direction of WHTT to 3 kW equivalent and then increase to 6 kW equivalent in other directions. In practice, it wouldn't make much sense - there are other limitations in just about every other direction (co-channel 103.9A near Syracuse, grandfathered 103.7B in Ithaca, drop-in 103.5A in Sodus, plus Canadian allocations to protect) that make it sensible to stick with what we've already got.

(Did I mention I engineer WDKX now?)

You bring up an interesting point: how many 3 kw @ 300 feet A's could not go to 6 kw when that power level became possible?

some can dish it; some can take it.
interesting thread.

Keep it professional

We may not see eye to eye on everything but I admire that you choose not to hide beside a screen name. I wish more on this board had the courage. It’s easy to criticize when you hide behind fake names.

Still strikes me odd, if not humorously entertaining, that a guy that has lived a major portion of his life utilizing a pseudonym would take issue with others doing somewhat the same. Is that what they call hypocrisy?

On the topic, anything to boost a local business is a good thing. I just wish I would run into even one single solitary person that listens to WECK.
