WECU 1570 is now on the air!

It’s always an exciting time for a radio nut like me when a new station signs on the air. It’s even more exciting when a rarity occurs here Down East – A new AM station has fired up its transmitter for the first time.

1570 WECU is a new full-time station in Winterville/Greenville licensed to CTC Media Group. They are the same folks that own the two graveyard stations in New Bern (formerly WHIT & WRNB, now WNOS & WWNB respectively) and the Bluegrass/C&W AM 1120 WSME at Camp LeJeune/Jacksonville. Currently WECU is simulcasting WWNB’s Black Gospel programming.

Here in Wilson, WECU stops on a scan on my Ford Ranger's radio. The modulation is loud and the sound is clear. There is slight power line interference at times. Also, WNCA Siler City could be heard shuffling in and out of the background, but it was not really that noticeable. It may be worse near sunset and sunrise.

CTC media was up against the calendar at getting the facility built and on the air. With the troubles that they've faced with zoning, I know they are relieved to have it on.

I believe WECU is the first new full-time AM station to sign on Down East since the sixties. WBQZ (now WSME) was the last AM station to sign on around here back in 1986. It was a daytimer.

CTC Media’s website page for WECU is:

Congratulations, CTC Media, on the birth of a new station!

Are they going to go with gospel music as their fulltime format? This market is already saturated with religious outlets. I have no trouble with an organization wanting to "spread the word", so to speak, but let's hope they're just testing the transmitter with it. The smart thing to do would be to simulcast WNOS with their MOYL-standards format. There is an audience for standards in Greenville which is presently not being served at all who would jump all over that.

WECU News..

A newspaper article describing the station mentions that WECU is being LMA'ed out by CTC Media. Pretty smart move, they have a new station on the air and are getting cash to operate it DAY ONE...

According to the article, studios are going to be in Gville. The same group also operates CTC's WWNB New Bern.

Both WWNB and WECU stream over the net.

I wish I could help you with 100,000watts.com, but I don't have the sixty bucks a year to spring for the service. I popped over there this afternoon and saw that they are having problems updating the data, so they may have tried to put it in.

However, WECU may still be operating under the construction permit, as is popular when a new station is being built from the ground up. That means you won't see the station listed at Radio Locator either. They get thier data directly from the FCC for Constructed Stations.

Here's the link for the construction permits at the FCC:
